On the road, for now:-)
Hi folks.....

I have a thread on its way out on my lower right hand caliper bolt hole. I understand that a heli-coil kit is the way forward however I can't find anyone to fit a kit once I have bought one. I have called a few engineering shops today only to be fobbed off with "theres not much call for that". Does anybody on here fit them or know where I can get it done. The kit itself is less than £20 quid so could do it myself but I dont have pillar drills etc to keep things square.

Any advise would be gratefully received............:ukgser:ukgser:spam:spam:tarka:tarka

Take the caliper to a local engineering firm. Ask them to drill the hole with a pillar drill and to tap it for you.

They might say "not much call for that". Turn up in the lunch hour with cash in hand and it'll be a different story.

If you're dealing with a stripped thread, it's almost out to size anyway so no major worries about drilling out of line. A helicoil kit doesn't come with the correct drill so you'll need to find one of those (size is written on the h/c box).

Practice on a bit of scrap aluminium to get the knack. Be very careful to let the heli-coil draw itself in and use the sliding collar on the tool to keep the coils closed up.

Make sure the insert is wound about half a turn past 'flush' and, if it's not a blind hole, use long nosed pliers to break off the tang rather than the punch supplied.

If you're really worried, try an 'engine shop', they deal with manifold studs and threads all the time.

On brake caliper mounts I have sometimes used longer bolts and the usual bolt don't go "all the way":D I have also used a longer bolt and a nut on the back. Never failed yet and saves the need for helicoils:augie

PS Same for stripped fork tube drain bolts. You know the pissy small ones! Longer NEW bolt does the job.:thumb2

thanks

I will have a think about the best "fix", just want it just right even though it's a 98 bike.............thanks for your replies and advise..........:Motomartin
