helicoil

Get someone to help you while you drill....

Anyone got any ideas on a bracket or something to make sure the drill goes in straight?
If you sight the drill bit as square to the original hole from the top and ask
someone else to watch and tell you Up or Down while looking from the side.

Right. Bar the second set of eyes, I've everything needed included an old pair of underpants:P

Wish me luck:eek

First helicoil inserted.

Number two inserted. Tang broken and removed on both.

Must remember if I do this again, not to have my face in front of the area when blowing it out with an air gun. The first load of swarf hit me in the eyes. Lucky I was wearing glasses:D

Rocker cover installed. No leaks. Tighter than a tight thing.

In a perverse sort of way, I enjoyed this!

Anyway, thanks for all your help folks. I think we all deserve a brew:friday:beerjug:

PS Thanks Bohsfc for giving me a bell.

well done lad least your sorted now.

keep a few helicoils spare, next time you take the cover off the coils canhave habbit of comming out with the bolt just insert a new one.

Ok. Might invest in a kit in due course. I've no intention of taking the cover off for a good few thousand miles.

With a well drilled and inserted helicoil that is as close to impossible as impossible gets.

You also mentioned in this thread that some people ream the hole with a drill by hand :D , these will be the same people that scrap what they're attempting to repair. :blast

Drills are for drilling and reamers are for reaming. :thumb2

well we have plenty of aircraft engines jet flying after 20years in business and never and issue,

lads use reamers when want to remove remaining threads not the create the new hole

we find that with well torqued bolts left in over time can bond to the insert and some pull out.

hence why we as matter of course replace them just for safety and its cheap peace ofmind as well

Well, you know what? I know what it takes and costs to fix it should it need replacing. Delighted with it.
