Hi , I'm new , is it ok for a first post to ask for advice ?

I've been offered a pretty good deal on an 1150 adventure ltd edition , I actually like the white and blue , am I odd ?

the question is about the seat , standard it is just that bit too high for me (5'-6" but long legs) , the dealer has said they can get the seat lowered professionaly by about 2" , has anyone any experience of having the seat lowered , does it compromise comfort ? does it look silly ?

thank for the help :)

Bloody hell, you get everywhere ....

I think you will need a lowered seat version ... I am 6ft 2ins and have had a few moments ... however some shorter/ more hobbit like people are perfectly happy ....

The std GS is an inch or so lower ......

29 views and only one reply , is it a really stupid question or should I have got the virtual beers in or something ? :(

Nah, don't worry about it - there's just a lot of lurkers out there. ;)

Or people like me who just don't know the answer...

My mate's just bought an 1150 with the tesco colour scheme too... very nice imho. He's 6' 5" though!!

Have an extended test-ride and do lots of stopping, see if you feel comfy with it. I'm 6'1, have no bother with it. As mentioned the standard GS is lower and has a choice of 2 seat heights (only available "pre-loved"). Also try a search on seat height, it's been discussed at length, should be plenty of views. If the worst happens and you buy it and find it too tall, I suppose I could offer a straight swap for my GS, in the spirit of welcoming you! :D

I have just bought a new adv and am having a few moments with it.
I am 5 10 and 32 inch leg.
I traded in my 02 adv which obviously had slightly knackered shocks, because even with the same seat (that I had altered slightly) the new one has me on tip toes when not loaded with a pillion and the old one did'nt.
I fitted 17 inch alloys which lowered it quite a bit (and I think look good) and I am now about to buy a pair of standard GS shocks.
I just need some decent lights & then I think it will be perfect for me.

Mike.

Don't fret about it, you'll end up getting another seat anyway :D

Welcome aboard. How long are your legs exactly? To give you a guide, mine are 32" inside leg and I find the low seat fine. The previous owner had bought the bike new with the low seat option. I recently tried the standard seat, but I must admit I found it too tall, and I had a few hair raising moments just riding around some of the country lanes where adverse cambers and gravel are common. You could risk it, but its a heavy bike to hold up if things do go pear shaped, so why bother ? If I were you I'd just buy it with a low seat.

Does it look silly? No - here's a picture of mine with the low seat. I tell you what would look silly - riding up to an aukward junction with a brand new limited edition Adventure, and dropping it just because you couldn't reach the floor. Now that would be a laugh a minute. :D :D Personally I find the low seat very comfortable, so much so that I recently did a 620 mile route in one day with no complaints. My advice, is play safe, buy it with the low seat and if by chance you find that it's too low, just swap it for a standard seat. You'd be surprised how many would be prepared to swap. It's a lovely bike. Enjoy. ;)

Hi Yellow, I am one of those "Short/hobbit types" 5'7ish not long legs, and ride my 02 Adv with standard seat, only had it about 6 months but so far so good, no probs.

You just become very good at reading cambers!!

Tony

Just got new GSA with standard seat, got 30 inch inside leg which gave some very dodgey moments on more than one occasion, put ohlins off my old bike (1150) on to lower it about a inch, so its o.k. now,
Have a pair of corbin seats I was going to put on as well, but think it would put me back to square one, as I struggled a bit with them on the 1150...:(

When I test rode a GSA they put the low seat on, and it was fine.

Thanks for the replies , I had a test ride on a standard GS last night and the seat height was fine , the dealer assures me that the standard seat can be lowered to the same height as this by their upholsterer , it looks like they have a sale to me :)

I also just went on the BMW site for an insurance quote , only £170 fully comp , thats amazing , I'm currently paying £450 for the Ducati :)

.......so what other "stuff" do I need to know next ?

You don't!

I've no doubt that people will pile in and say that you need this and that, but seriously, get the bike and get a thousand miles on it before you buy anything...it's a long and very slippery slope to an empty bank account and there are many toys that are nice but not essential.

Having said that ( ), tobinators to cure the buffetting, extra lights to cure the acknowledged Adv/1150 weak spot of having crappy lights and decent hard luggage would be the first things I'd be putting on a new Adv.

Then it's on to the toys (remus, y piece, gps, autocom, blah blah blah)

The search button at the top of the page is your friend......there's several years of combined knowledge and opinion built up and you'll have many hours of reading there about all the bits and bobs you might be fitting ;)
