Hello everyone,

I've been away for awhile - nearly four years or so - whilst I pursued a slightly different career path that really required I drive a car and not ride a motorcycle.

However, that has reached its end and I've decided to move my truck on and get my R80G/S back to condition.

So, in essence I am posting as a warning for the barragé of amateur hour posts which will no doubt find their way on to here as I reacquaint myself with how my machine works!

I do hope that everyone here that I've met before is keeping well.

Thanks guys! Yep, very much looking forward to getting involved again. I am nigh on 28 now so probably still considerably younger than the average Airhead!
 
Looking a little sad but sure she'll look great again for a little TLC.

Anyone have any experience of using one of these to replace the beancan? Mine has totally packed up and it seems pointless to try and effect a repair upon it.

It's a good system made by Emerald Isle, I got it on all 3 of my Airheads, its marketed all over the world under various names!

It's got it's own unique characteristics, it coughs very occasionally at very low revs, but it's not a problem and it starts much better!

Yep, also have fitted this system to my G/S, the first one failed in 300 miles, a dodgy one probably.. but as always Motorworks replaced with the new Uprated system with no issues and so far all is well and def runs smoother than the standard set up.
All Motorworks current stock are a new batch from early this year and is fully guaranteed and recommended by many.:)

It's also fairly easy to fit and time up with a strobe light so hopefully fit and forget.

The beancan kind of strikes me as being in a weird phase of technology, being neither fully electronic or fully mechanical and so arguably possess the flaws of both without the benefits of either.

It was late seventies technology and a logical step from the fully mechanical unit fitted to the 79/80 machines.

If your going to have a points system then that is the way to do it. there's nothing stopping you fitting the points based bean can to your bike. A few adventurers have done this to simplify their bikes. The only downside is the quality of condensers available is dreadful although it's possible to source quality ones for vw campers apparently.

The Hall effect sensor and ignition box was state of the art thinking at the time. Porsche, Audi and many others used the exact same components for their vehicles at the time. They've all worked flawlessly for years.
 
I think there is a little more teleology in the black boxes today than there was in the original ones.
The old type were little more than an amplifier and switch and did little else.
And with mechanical advance your "curve" is pretty much a straight line.Unless something is worn or broke.
The new black boxes are have a bit more circuitry - they fire at exactly even intervals, dwell is automatically controlled and pretty much any ignition curve can be programmed in.
There is also nothing mechanical to wear, stick or break, so they are pretty much set and forget - the Boyer in my R75/7 hasn't been touched in 19 years.
Only question mark on the Emerald Isle stuff, apart from his tendency to use the first customers as product testers, is what curve he is using - Boyer revisited his settings a few years back, and his current stuff is a noticeable improvement on stock, and his twin plug system works really well.

I've taken delivery of the electronic ignition, which appears to be remarkably solid and well made, alongside a few other bits so am going to do my best to get it all fitted and the machine running this afternoon.

As ever I will be on the look out for a bits so please do let me know if you have any of them going spare!

I could do with the wraparound style, Krauser, crash bars; some handguards; a PD style screen; and any other interesting items people might have.

Guys,

Quick Q/favour. Would anyone in Surrey, or close to, happen to have a bearing puller suitable for removing the swinging arm bearings of a monolever G/S? Or perhaps know of a shop capable of removing them?
