Helmet dilema

Don't make sense - they've already "authorised" the pump by letting you use it, so they are already guilty of a potential fine. If they then discover that you are under 16 when and if you take your helmet off, they have two choices :-
1. Take your money
2. Report you and syphon the petrol back out of your tank.

Tough call for the poor till attendant!!!!

I wonder I wore a Hijab over my helmet would they have the balls to ask me to remove it?

Only been ever asked once...and that was in the busy area of dent! Must have been all of ten people in the store and 2 vehicles in the parking....jokers. Never get asked in London, ever...

So, having a senior Shell manager as a mate, I can say this is under review.

The real reason they need to see your face is that petrol can only be purchased by someone over 16 years - so, just like selling booze or fags, the garage can get a substantial fine if they authorise the pump to an under 16.

A mandate was issued by Shell HQ that all motorcyclists should show their face. The manager that signed this off was not satisfied that someone riding a bike has to by law be over 16 years. Their paranoia was that someone breaking the law might buy petrol leading to fines and loss of licence plus bad publicity.

It seems that this has had an unexpected backlash and employees are complaining about dealing with hostile motorcyclists. Petrol stations have a high staff turnover of staff anyway and this is a contributing factor.

So, in the new year, said friend has been tasked with reviewing their policy to a) comply with the law so that staff & businesses won't cop a fine b) keep customers happy c) keep staff happy.

Just a question - under the current system, does someone with a burka/religious face covering have to prove that they are over 16 by showing their face?

Never had a problem in Oz.

On my way from Tassie to Sunshine Coast QLD this last September after filling up my GS and walking in to pay I was told to remove my Shark Evo3 flip helmet, once in Victoria and another in NSW both small backward ass country towns but I refused and just payed and was told to next time take it off, my response was to not worry about it too much as I would never ever set foot there again.

I had this once, well sort of, at Coffs Harbour NSW with this stupid cow of a customer banging on about it for ages how I was scaring her. She kept on repeating how I was breaking the rules and how much I scared her. I was simply standing at the counter with my credit card out.

The guy behind the counter was about 18 and looked totally bored lol.

Tell the person behind the counter that you're 'Bike-o-farian'.
In the same trend as done by the 'Flying Spaghetti Monster' followers (called Pastafarians), who sometimes wear a colander as religious sign.
They are known to even get their headgear in identity photos for official purposes!
You could say you're a dedicated follower of the 'Flying Helmet Monster'...or make something up. :D

I have posed this question many times and got a fudged answer. The company realises their policy is not fit for purpose, hence the review, so I suggest people wait & see the outcome, if any.

Just got petrol this morning at my local Shell - they have the stickers on the pumps asking for removal of helmets, Never been asked to take mine off yet !? Ive bought petrol with my Roof flip front down and open. Must admit I usually open the flip front before filling the bike and have my wallet in my hand when I go in. Never had a problem (yet)
This only shows their policy is not consistently applied - having said that if you are on a big bike (and a fully grown 'biker' type person) like most of you good folks - theres no way you would be under 18 anyway because of bike licensing laws and / or insurance costs !!

Seems to me that once the petrol is in your bike, what you wear when you pay for it is up to you.

Worst they can do is refuse to take your money - in which case free petrol.;)

I have never (so far) been asked to remove my helmet, I guess I must look old enough by my general demeanour :nenau
I usually put the bike on the main stand ( to brim the tank) so that removes the likelyhood of fast getaway in the event of non payment.
I have many times walked to the cashier with my flip front up, but with a buff covering all but my eyes.

This isn't just bollocks from Shell, I was told to remove it when trying to purchase at the local Tesco's........with Pay at Pump!! Funny thing is if I go there between 22.00 and 07.00 I can purchase it at the pump as the stations unmanned and leave my helmet on.

I have been told it's to identify drive offs, but as a bike may be good for 20 quid I think the risk from a £100 4x4 fill should be more of a concern. I mention this after a Twat in a range rover paid my 15 quid fill at Scotch Corner and pissed off with over 100 quid in fuel. You can imagine the conversation I had trying to convince them I hadn't paid, until they twigged they had an unpaid pump.

Well if i have already had my petrol, and they are making a fuss about my helmet whilst trying to pay...their loss to be honest.

wonder what the stats are for theft of fuel in motorcycle against using a car. I always thought you had to take your helmet off as you do in banks/post office etc in case you carry out a proper robbery?

Best action anyone can do is refuse and boycott the garage once you have filled up. Trouble is bikers are a minority. I went into a retailer yesterday wearing my leathers and carrying my helmet and I distinctly felt like a 2nd class citizen. The reason why they don't ask hijab/burka/IS sympathisers to remove their head gear is in case they have reprisals.

If you use a card fraudulently then they can't identify you.... If you use a card fraudulently the card company won't pay for the petrol... The petrol station loses out.... But no let's make this another tedious race discrimination thread.... If you don't like it buy a Jerry can....

Hello Moderators, I think David's account has been hacked by some lefty liberal pinko hippy. You might want to look into it.
