Helmet lock

I am in the process of buying one of these -

I have one of these, purchased a couple of years ago from ebay for under a tenner and works fine. However i need my glasses to see the code as its quite small especially when its dark out. Lets face it if you have a very expensive helmet use a D lock or take it with you. I have a 1150 and use the bikes helmet lock all the time never had a problem.

Today I have a 1200 GSA TC and it has a stupid helmet lock which is a spur you can hook your D ring over that is capped when the seat is in place, it's a pain to take the seat off and back on again

Exactly...

Now this is a proper helmet lock, fully functional and useful for helmets with a D lock

Additionally, you have plenty of 'ironwork' to slip through a cable lock, through the helmet's chinguard ..... for extra security, should you so desire

Helmets are securely held in place, unlike when rested on the seat/rack and can wobble about

I use mine regularly when stopping for a short time, for a brew etc

In the good, old days BMW used to sell a waterproof helmet bag, with a combination lock too, so you could keep your helmet not only dry, but relatively secure

Modern WC GS's.....................so much fashion, over function:augie

Give my a well thought out, proper 1100/1150GS............designed by engineers and not accountants :bounce1

Come on, it's a twist of a key and lift the seat a little FFS ;)
Besides, don't go giving him (JB) more bullets to fire :blagblah

Exactly...

In all the years I've known you I've NEVER seen you use the helmet lock, a pacsafe combination cable lock is the way to go, it's more versatile and can be used on D ring and ratchet strap lids, a worthwhile penny pinching saving by the Munich bean counters I say :D

The old 1150 locks are ok and better than nothing; they look solid and heavy but they are not that secure because they use the strap to hold the helmet - much better to pass a chain through the helmet chin bar. The old 1200GS wire loop under the seat was just as crap because for the same reason. The LC has nothing so you have to provide your own solution.

I think that BMW should provide a simple strong 'curly' steel bicycle style lock under the seat as standard - and make it long enough to go through two chin bars.

Am I the only rider who uses a topbox for storing helmet? Dry and relatively secure. Also good for gloves, specs, shopping, sandwiches....

You misread my post, you can use the helmet lock AND a curly bicycle chain, should you feel the need, poor marks for lack of comprehension of post#25

Ha................if only use it when i'm not with you, dahlink

Seriously, when we're together (:hug) I usually have my panniers on and it's a bit of a faff with panniers fitted, (you can use it, still but a bit of careful positioning is needed)

In the main, I use it when having a browse around a town or go for a coffee, with the bike out of sight

If the place is in sight or busy, I just leave my helmet on the mirror

If somebody wants my helmet, they're welcome to it and I'll getting a new one on the house insurance:D

The reply of a fair weather rider:D

When you've got places to go and things to do the GSA, poor excuse of a helmet lock, is a complete faff...

And inorder to lift the front seat you first have to take off the rear seat and put it somewhere - it's a faff unless you don't mind faffing around hoping someone will engage you in conversation about your bike:augie

What a load of nonsense. If I go somewhere dodgy where the helmet needs to be locked to the bike (Yorkshire :P), I'll either take it with me, or chuck it in the luggage, locked up nice and safe.

Helmet locks, pah!:rolleyes::JB

But why use two things when one is sufficient.

True but... If I am travelling alone then my helmet goes into the large Vario pannier, when two up I lock both helmets to the bike.

But all those £10's add up and it would seem the modern GSer no longer sees the value in them... Tossers with a little 't' :-)

True

You can't beat the convenience of the 1150 GS with the helmet lock & proper toolkit & tyre plugger kit under the pillion seat

Still a great bike despite the weight
