Helmet storage

Hi Folks
My wife and I will be taking the Santander/Portsmouth ferry in July and I'm thinking of locking our helmets to the bike.
I would appreciate any advice as to whether it would be safe to do so, just trying to reduce the amount of stuff to take up to our cabin,

Personally I always leave my top box empty, the lids go in there whenever we stop

My helmet goes in my topbox after I have removed my overnight bag. Gloves protect the visor.

Lots of people leave riding gear attached to the bikes. Some people use a security wire, some a cargo net, others nothing secured. The deck is sealed during transit but just be aware the ferry will rock & roll and after the ferry docks, lots of other riders might be walking through the narrow gaps between bikes before you get down to it.

A simple security wire, will be more than adequate. I use one of these:




Why?

It doesn’t have a key. This means there is one thing less to lose when I am away.

I also use it when I am stopped in a town for a coffee or a walk around and don’t want to cart my helmet with me.

Yup and you can get them from China for less, too.

It was the style of cable lock I was intending to refer to, rather than saying “Go out and buy an Abus”. In reality, any simple cable lock will do.



I also have a cable lock like this, which I run through my jacket sleeve and helmet, when leaving the pair of them on the bike too, along with my trousers.

I also have a home made cable, made for me I’d guess 40 years ago, by a friend.

It’s a length of flexible plastic covered steel cable, which is used as a ‘safety wire’ on yachts, to stop people falling overboard. This he terminated at each end with rust-proof metal eyelets, to pass a padlock hasp through. It does the job. I think I bought him a pint at the time.

It is. As I say, it being a combination lock, means one less key to lose or forget. I use my bank card PIN code.

Excellent piece of kit I also have one of these,

I use it to lock the jackets to the bike when the panniers are full and the lids are in the top box, just pass the cable through a sleeve and around the grab rail

It’s very small so just lives in the top box permanently

I bought the Abus lock mentioned from louismoto in germany when passing through, iirc it was less than 10 eurobucks, good bit of kit that is absolutely adequate for the OP's situation and impromptu coffee stops. Think a decent set of side cutters would see it off mind.

No doubt. It is though a step up from the average bikermate, who hangs his helmet on his mirror or dumps it on the petrol pump, then wanders off. Usually the same bod who worries about biker friendly hotels, pixilates his number plate and six inch nails his sat nav to its mount, as thieves are about.

At least , if he’s on the latest wankpanzer, he won’t have to worry about some scrote pinching his luggage !!

Consider that your whole trip could be ruined if one or both helmets go missing or get damaged. For peace of mind I'd always keep my lid with me for what little effort it takes to carry it to your cabin. They fit under the bed or on the top bunk depending on your room type so no space wasted. Just my thoughts.

You can of course always wear it for the duration of the crossing, too.

Thanks for all your feedback. Will probably go with locking helmets to the bike, they will sit on top of the seat/side panniers.
