Helmet type

Hi all.
New to the “adventure bike” thing and need to buy a new helmet as my old harley one just wont do

I am curious as to what you guys use - full face or open face ?
Coming from a half helmet ( oo er mrs ) - i,m not keen on being enclosed in a full face.
I do have a full face flip for touring but everyday riding still thinking of half/open helmet.

Any thoughts ?

We're all (mostly) just middle aged stereotypes. Rukka suits, Daytona boots and Schuberth C3/C4 Pro helmets. Rukka gloves are also v good.

Schubert M1, like an open face but has a good wrap around visor, neat built in comms, and is very quiet. I would buy another, I like to ride with the visor up, great behind the screen of the GS, when the visor is down still plenty of fresh air.

Wow - no massive peaks on full blown MX helmets ?

Full face. With peak.

I didn't pick a helmet with a peak to fit the type of bike I ride, as I've always had trail type bikes.

What made the peak important to me, was riding my bike to work.

I'd ride to work with the sun low in my eyes, and then ride home with the same.

Having the peak really cuts out the unwanted light and since I changed (quite late on really) I'll never go back.

In my opinion, Arai make the best helmets, that means I have a Tour-X 4. It's my second one.

To be honest, go somewhere that has all brands and types of helmet and try a load on to see what's comfortable for you. If you have a 'look' that you want to go for, go for it.

Full face touring lid with a built in sun visor, mine’s a Shoei,

I always ride with the clear visor down no matter how hot it is, some of the bugs that explode in your face are like a custard filled albatross

Flip front Shoei for me.

Shoei helmets seem to fit my odd head. I did try a scuberth, but was between sizes, one was too tight, the next size up too loose....so back to a Shoei.

Aria do good helmets, but not a good flip front with a drop down sun visor.

I agree with the above comment: Go somewhere with lots of brands, and lots of different helmet styles and see what you like and more importantly, what fits you properly.

I'm an Arai type head, and got an Arai X-Tour 4 last year (peak) to go with my recently purchased adventure bike, and I love it. It doesn't buffet any more with the peak, gives a huge field of vision and once I had changed the cheek pads for a smaller set fits perfectly. I also love when stood in the rain the peak helps keep the rain off me and dripping down the back of the visor when open (glasses wearer).

I do have a schuberth but very rarely use it. Otherwise I have a shoei open face with flip down visor and a Davida open face which is the best open face helmet I have owned and had a few of them in my time.

I have the system 7. I have been using it last week with the flip up removed. It’s very lightweight then, but the sun visor doesn’t come down just far enough and you can get the odd bug getting up there. It’s a good helmet overall, but the comms system doesn’t perform as good as its predecessor.

All in all tho, it’s whatever feels the comfiest, and you generally get what you pay for in helmets

BMW carbon GS helmet. Tried all the others over the years and about to get another so I can rotate. Love it.

After years with a flip up that I rarely closed I swapped to a shark evolution,
Pros, open face without a big sail on your head, ability to close it if needed, sun visor and standard visor can be used in open mode.
Cons, takes 2 hands to close, no matter how I set it up the pin lock scratches when raising and lowering the visor to the point that I binned it. (the pin lock not the helmet)

I have a Schuberth C3 Pro, which is great, especially with the Sena SC10U comms. GF and I both have them. Quiet and comfy, great quality...

However, I too fancied a "modular" helmet, and also bought a full modular one, with comms (not as good comms as the Sena tho) But I have the best of both worlds...an open face for dawdling on warm days, and a full-face for faster work.

So I can leave home, and blast up the the Dales full-face, then open the front and dawdle wound the small roads fully open-faced...

Have a look at the Scorpion Exo-Tech, I got mine under £200 from Helmet City at the NEC last autumn

You can tell it's a cheaper helmet that the C3 Pro, it's a bit noisier on the bike, but I really like it!

I have x2 lids i use on the GS:

Shoie Neotec II - best of both worlds, flip down sun visor, full face for the rain and or colder days then flip up when it's warmer... Great lid...

Klim Krios - most comfortable lid i've ever owned, typically adventurous and similar to the Arai Tour-X but a lot cheaper, significantly lighter and more comfortable... The newer Krios Pro is more expensive, similar to the Tour-X. I bought the earlier version and paid less then £300 new from the Adventure Bike Shop..

The Krios is a re-badged Nishua Carbon. I use one and like you say they are incredibly light and dead comfy.

It's worth knowing for the OP that they are on offer at the moment at silly money (£160) from louis.com LINKY
