help 1150 backfire

2001 1150gs - new to me, no cat
had a remus can with no baffle and I replaced with OEM can

rolling off throttle at about 3000 rpm - it backfires (big bangs, not popping on the over-run)
any ideas you big brainers?

My guzzi breva does that, it's probably a joint leak, having said that if mine were to stop doing it it would be so disappointing!


I guess it's drawing air in and mixing with un burnt fuel, mine sounds fantastic though!

Air leak somewhere on the exhaust.
My 1100 does it sometimes when rolling off from highish rpm - a proper bang - sounds like a gun going off

No cat, sounds like it may be running weak if you dont have any air leaks

Search for "cat code plug".There is a schematic somewhere showing which pins to link up in the relay box.This enables the ECU to change maps according to various conditions.
Sometimes it works,other times some carefull setup sorts out the banging.

I had a 1150 did exactly the same
Remus can and Y piece
I put the standard can on with Y piece all ok after that
I also tried the Briss spark plugs that didn't make any difference

Considering that it's fuel in the exhaust exploding, I fail to understand how making it run richer is a cure!

If you set the fast idle to "on" it stops it.

My 1999 R1100GS has this problem also, ... very loud 'bangs' on rapid deceleration. I'm not sure my neighbors appreciate it.
My bike has been de-catted, has the y-pipe and Remus exhaust.
Anyhow, it has been explained to me that the problem is not 'backfire' which would occur in the intake plumbing, ... but 'afterfire' which occurs in the exhaust plumbing.
My plan is to tighten up the exhaust system as suggested above by sheene.

It's a bit hit and miss for me but the best result when out with my son on the pillion and being mischeavous was right by the ear of the top down Ferrari 360 driver stuck in traffic down the high street

Mine spits a flame out the back, why would I want to fix that?

Mine did this when I put a Y piece on (with std can), and no leaks. Put cat back on with stubby and never done it since.
