HELP !!!!! 2014 GS 1200 LC PROBLEMS in GREECE

two bolts will allow you to remove the black cap and expose the wheel/cable mechanism.

liberally dose it with oil/chain lube/engine oil , etc.

walla

If it is the exhaust flap sticking (and it certainly sounds like it is), lubing it with WD40 will only last so long until the heat of the exhaust burns it off, you need something like nickelslip or coppaslip in there to survive the heat.
Take the cables off the drive servo and make sure the flap is open (it should spring open but if it is suffering lack of lubrication it may not do this without external force)
The flap serves only to reduce noise, BMW supplied and fitted aftermarket headers do not use it so there is no problem removing it or disabling it in situ.

Thanks ...suggestions appreciated

Removing the flap ( I have) does actually generate a fault code at service time but the fault can not be cleared as there is no valve flap for the diagnostic to find

Not that anyone should be concerned about this fault as the bike is better for it IMO

Thanks comments appreciated

the bit were BMW will not assist is true if the bike is still working and moving ……so you tell them its not moving ….and to get there fat arses down to you….however in this case the squeak will stop if you revive the valve flap thats causing it to be noisy ! it will do no damage to the bike and will let you enjoy the rest of Greece

only just read this thread as i have just encountered the squeaky exhaust flap whilst in southern spain....i must admit that it made no difference to the bikes performance and i rode it home and then lubricated it.....however..... i read the post from edwgordon and was surprised (or not..) by the knobs on here who simply take the piss.....probably experienced adventure travellers who do a whopping 850 miles a year on their spotless machines..... This guy was asking for help / advice as he was unsure and a little worried about a noise on his GS, he may not be a mechanically minded chap and be unsure whether to ride on or not..... bear in mind he could be a doctor or dentist which none of us know fuck all about and therefore attend them for advice.... It pisses me off that knobs take the piss when a guy clearly needs some sensible advice and help whilst on his holiday.....in other words..if ya got fuck all to say..dont say it.... Rant over... and in future help ya fellow bikers...

I'd just ignore it, they do seize up occasionally. I had to be told mine had seized as I had not noticed!
As mentioned the WD40 will stop it only briefly, don't worry about it at all, just have a great time.
I do have a full OEM system sat in my garage if you want a cheap slightly used one when you get back.

Mines OK as I just carried on till home and lubricated it..... Just felt a little sympathy for the guy who asked for help and was taken the piss out of. Is this what bikers do ...??? I'm all for a laugh but if a guy needs help ..... mines a 14 LC with 43000 miles so prob getting a bit tired...

Nice

Wd40 in this case serves only to diagnose the problem, if after application the noise stops, you have found the cause. As has been mentioned, appropriate lubrication should then be applied.
Some of the comments may seem unkind but an adventure should include a bit of self education prior to setting off IMHO.

The fact that the poor guy went to a garage and they didnt help him, and scared him with a 2k bill over nothing, far out weighs the abundance of good advice and mixed banter,
If ed is around it would be interesting to know how he proceeded re the squeak,
Roamer,

Mine siezed shut and I never noticed. The price quoted will be for a replacement exhaust system less end can as they come in one piece. I must of ridden mine for several thousand miles before the dealer noticed (on.a separate warranty issue) and it did no damage. I think you should either disconnect the cables with the flap in the open position or just put up with it. Either way, crack ok with the trip; you never know when you'll get another opportunity.

Buy some tools if your not carrying any and remove it free it off lube it up and refit a 10 minute job or just ignore it On the last trip we did we had the charging system on a blackbird spread all over the floor adds to the fun its the unpredictable things that make bike touring fun

On our last trip my mate had a black bird spread everywhere

I also had mine replaced at a service and hadn't noticed it was faulty, now done away with.

The flap is only there to get bike through noise emmisions testing.

And three cheers John Bailey!
