2003 5500 mile standard GS. The problem I am having is if I am not out on the bike for a few days the battery goes flat. The clock on the RID goes to 00:00. e.g. I purchased an optimate for the winter months when I was not out much. On Sunday disconnected the optimate and went out and did 70 miles. I did not connect it when I came back in as I knew I would be going out this evening. Went out this evening and the RID was at 00:00 and the bike started but only just. Should I use the optimate all the time or is there a problem with the battery (warranty issue). For the record I have nothing extra electrical fitted to the bike. Eagerly awaiting help, Thanks, Ricky.:(

Do you know if the altanator is charging the battery?

Is the battery holding its charge?

It should be fully charged after 70 miles (unless you had H/light & Heated grips on all the time).

It is worth telling the dealer about it as they will check it for you as its still under warranty.

I have a 2001 bike and the only problem I had was in the cold weather the battery was so low it reset the clock when I started it and the ABS refused to come on untill the charge was high enough. I dont charge it unless I have left it for a couple of weeks without using it (very rare) and then it usually only needs 10 minuits charging to get it started then a good run will charge it fully.
An Optimate should keep it in good condition though unless as you say you may have a duff battery.

Just had the same on my 03 . New battery seems to have cured the problem.
