Not too concerned at the moment but I have a smell of burning oil briefly when I turn the engine off whilst still sitting on the bike from the engine area. My 08 GSA bike is 16mths old, 1400 miles (yes, I know, I brought it recently so will use it properly!), had dealer service at 12 mths no issues, oil level is stable, am assuming could be something to do with oil breather system? Has anyone experienced this and can tell me not to worry so I will sleep better!

Thanks all. :(

Don't worry unless there's oil dripping on the garage floor.

Sounds like a well used engine to me.

Thanks guys, not well used, only 1,400 miles from new so far. Engine immaculate, no oil stains etc, just found another post talking about this as being ok and to be expected with a low milage engine. Started with an 06 GSA low miles also a few years ago, didn't have this so compaire bikes without thinking.

My 5 week old, 1450 mile GS has just stopped smelling of hot oil every time I stop so I would suggest it's something which will gradually go away as the engine builds up a few more miles.

It could be oil blow-by from your piston rings causing a pressure build-up in the sump/crankcase which normally vents into the airbox These engines take about 14,000 miles of running before the piston rings reach optimum sealing due to the large clearances used (aircooled) and almost permanent oil film in the bottom of the horizontal cylinders.

On the LH side of the engine is a black breather hose about an inch in diameter, which goes from the rear of the LH cylinder to the airbox. On my bike this vibrated loose and had to be clipped back on. Maybe this could be loose on your bike, thus causing a hot oil smell when stopped ??

it may just be the newness of the engine
its worth checking the engine seal oilseal is not leaking into the clutch bell housing
its a possibility ..happened to mine and is not unheard of,,it does make that oily burning smell which is what first alerted me to it

if it appears after a slow speed manouver u turn start stop ..hill start ..anywhere where u slip the clutch alot and stop shortly after ..if its there then it will be a good indication of a contaminated plate

after a while there is a tiny slither of oil appearing where the bell housing joins the engine
in this pic its obvious .but may not show very early on
have a good look round for peace of mind
or ask your dealer to check it for you
