Help - can't put bolt back in

Hi fellas,

I am sure this has been posted already, but I can't find it so please me .

Yesterday when enjoying the traffic in London at 1.00 pm, the engine of my bike started to rattle for 4 times with the temperature gage on the 6th bar. I suspected it is due to the tensioners, but never had this before so I don't really know. Right, will come back to this topic later.

Now, I have an urgent problem... I removed this bolt:

The question is: how to I put this back in????

Oh Bollix!

Chain tensioner guide bolt, Take off rocker cover and move the guide up until you can get the bolt started

It would be an idea to put it to TDC on this Cylinder i.e. plugs out, ignition off, centre stand, up to top gear, wooden skewer thru plug hole and watch the inlet valves once they have shut feel for the top of the stroke and if you miss it don;t worry too much

Then you will probably need to slacken Bolt 10 in that diagram to release the pressure on the timing chain

Should work okay

Now, any takers for a remote diagnosis on the intermittent engine rattle when hot?

I removed the tensioners and indeed they are the old ones.

At the end of the day: should I worry?

Use a thicker oil ... what are you using ? If you are using a 10w 40 try a 15 or 20w 50 . Does it rattle as much in the cold winter months ?

Yup I use 10W40 GPS. Never ever had any issue with this oil.

The rattle was quite strong and noticeable... it nearly felt like it had loose parts inside the engine .

GPS is a motorcycle specific oil, i.e. designed for use with a wet clutch and integral gearbox.
Your bmw has none of these requirements, it has a dry clutch and seperate gearbox.

Get some 20/50 engine oil.

Thanks Steptoe. I understand the GPS specs are appropriate for other engines (e.g. my f800s). I use GPS mostly because it is semi-synthetic meaning i can service it every 5500 miles. Actually I just got Mobil Super S semi-synthetic ready to service the bike.

Without degenerating into another "what oil" thread, though that may be the issue really, any other suggestions ?

I've been caught in London traffic in the height of a hot summer, 7 bars showing on the 1150GS, it sounded like a bag of old nails. That was probably about 30,000 miles ago, still runs OK. Don't panic, as Steptoe said, put 20-50 oil in it.

The updated left hand cam chain tensioner assembly cured my startup rattles - not sure if it'd do anything for your 'hot engine' rattling though. As others say, 20w50 will probably fix it.

Used 20/50 for the first time this year ,bike running a hole lot cooler ,its diffcult to get up to 5 bars , Just my 2p worth .

Hein Gericke own brand full synthetic - I thinks it's 15w50 is my tipple of choice. Cheap too
