HELP!! Engine just stopped????

Been out for A ride with the lads tonight and one of the lads bike just died, He was doing about 65 mph for about two miles and just lost power, I was behind him there was no smoke or any thing but one of the other boys who passed him said it was rattling when he passed, When he came to a halt the bike was still running but wouldn't rev so he switched it off he tried to start it briefly but no luck, The bike is a 2007 r1200gs 7500miles FSH (BMW) Any ideas any one???

what does it do when its tried to start it? does it crank over as normal (with the uh-uh-uh-uh) sound or does it spin very freely?.....or it does it not crank over at all?

If it is a Full service history Do Not Mess with it recover it home and contact them!

By Full serv history it should have had a PDI a 600 and a 6000 mile service plus 2 annuals

If ya mess they may turn on heels IF it is something serious!

it cranked over but did not start or sound to good (it was strugling)

it was 8.30 when he called the AA and they said two hrs he told us to go home as he was buy a restaurant

could be a knackered battery thats not holding charge hence it dying when the volltage dropped. Do the headlights dim when its trying to start?

Sounds like classic FPC failure..... apart from the rattle, but that may be a red herring. Put it on the mainstand and select top gear, turn the engine over using the rear wheel and see if you and feel compression on both cylinders. Hope that you can as that means it's probably not expensive - like a dropped valve.

Turn the ignition on (don't press the starter) and very carefully listen for a brief whiiiruppp noise from the front of the petrol tank. If no noise (from the fuel pump) the FPC is knackered and the fuel pump won't operate, hence no fuel pressure and no engine
