Hello there,

this is my first thread so please go easy.:jibber

I recently returned from work to find that the battery on my 2007 F 650 GS DAKAR was dead. I recharged the battery and tried starting it. It turned over but the battery was was still too low. Recharged it over night. Tried starting it this morning and it starts fine. However, when it starts it idles over 5000rpm.

Ive checked the throttle cable and it all looks fine. Is there some sort of idle regulator that is stuck on full and if so does anyone know where it is? Has anyone heard of this problem before. I was reading that the low battery when starting could of damaged solenoids or something???

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the site Paul :thumb

A quick 'search' would have come up with this ....

Your problem, with what's happened, will probably need nothing more than the throttle re-set doing. Good luck :thumb

:beerjug:

Edit .... if it works, and solves your problem, may I suggest that you pay your subs and become a full member, you'll get more than your monies worth back for it :D

Also make sure you use no throttle when starting as it upsets the throttle position sensor if you do.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

thank you for your help with this. I tried both your ideas but we still have the same problem. Looks like it going back to BMW!!

Thanks,

PD

If the bike has injection then the idle speed is controlled by the Idle Speed Control (ISC). It is mounted on the throttle body by two screws.

It would be worth checking that the connector has not come loose - not very likely, or that it is not stuck on fast idle due to dirt on it.

For the latter, remove the two screws, remove the ISC and take a look at it. It comprises a stepper motor (in the black plastic body) and a shaft with a stub on the end. Try cleaning it and also where it slides in on the throttle body. It is also possible to gently pull the shaft out further although not sure that proves very much.

Whilst you are there, check that is not something simpler like the throttle valve not seating. From the outside, the throttle valve (butterfly) should also be closed against the throttle stop screw. If not then that may be the cause possibly from a cable issue or gunk inside the throttle body stopping it from closing.

Let us know how you get on.

Idle Control ECU

Hi everyone,

thank you for all the help. I did everything that everyone suggested. However, I sent the bike to BMW this morning. Unfortunately the news isn't good.

Turns out that there is no signal from the ECU to the Idle control unit. BMW say its a faulty ECU and will need a new unit AUD$1100 (650GBP). Unbelievable !!

Thanks again for all the help.

All is not lost Paul...
There are plenty F650GS/ Dakar ECUs about - search eBay for 'BMS-C' and/or 'F650GS ECU' - when viewing results make sure any potentials are from a 2004-2007 bike (Twinspark engine etc)...

A quick search finds a couple fully tested and compatible with your '07 Dak which I am sure could be shipped to Oz for a reasonable amount :thumb

Thank you for the advice.

I've contacted another BMW Mechanic and he is looking into seeing if he is able to fit a pre-used ECU onto my bike.

Is it a simple swap over? If it was a simple swap over I could do it myself:nenau.
My BMW dealer made it out to be quite a difficult process and that a second hand ECU could not be used. He would say that though.

Thanks again,

P

Paul.
They should be a simple 'swap out' however I am not sure what's involved in setting them up after fitting, albeit it shouldn't be more than the ECU reset process...?

I'll ping someone and see if they can confirm what's required - the chap in question (Martin) also sells 650GS & Dakar stuff therefore might have a good used Twinspark ECU that can be shipped to Oz for a reasonable price :beerjug:

Hello there, I am the aforementioned man with the parts and I do indeed have what you might be looking for. I certainly have a used unit for you but I am not sure about the re-programming part as I have not had to do that before. I have another unit here also which I think is a brand new one but I need to double check as it was taken as a spare on a rally and I believe it returned un used. If it is then that might be your best bet and I can certainly get it you for a fraction of what you were quoted out there. My email is [email protected] if you want to get hold of me directly.

Cheers

Thank you

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the help back in August. The problem turned out to be the ECU. My mechanic took it apart and found water inside it??? Anyway, my mechanic fitted a second hand one and it purred like a kitten again.

The bike trip from Melbourne to Darwin went great. I did have a pretty bad crash. I got the tank slaps at 130kmph on a corrugated dirt road and got flicked off (I know I was driving far too fast). After many doctors/ MRI`s/ X-rays and physio I am on the road to recovery. I have some surgery to be done on my wrist and a dodgy shoulder now but hopefully in time it will come good. The bike survived with only bent handlebars, scratched fairing and bent front subframe. Cannot believe it was not destroyed. I have the whole accident on GoPro so I might send a link through.

Thanks again,

Paul

Like to see the vid 130k's on a Dakar on dirt is impressive
Glad the bike & you are ok
