In short, how can one distinguish a 1995 R100GS PD from a Classic? For that matter a regular GS? I've checked several other sites but remain bewildered. OK, I am an idiot. But is there a VIN differentiator such as vehicle code, series, model that will betray a coat of paint and a decal?

Great site, hope to join in GS ownership soon.

Visual clue

Don't know about a VIN identification but all 'Classic' models were made with rounded valve covers.

Of course other models can be retro fitted so not 100%.

when you say a "classic" do you mean a "basic" ? ,

thats what they're called here in europe -

Classic vs Basic. Good question. I believe in 1995, last year for the airhead R100(?), in the US the "Classic" was a tarted up version of the PD. Based on the relative 'blue book' values (higher than a GS or GS PD) the Classic wasn't basic in its sticker price, trim, etc.

I have read that only a few of these were actually imported or sold. Numbers seem to vary but less than 100. Opening the possiblity of someone doing a back alley upgrade to Classic status.
