Help for a short arse!

Hi Guy's and Gal's,

I am getting worried here! At 5 foot 8 in high heels!!!! I can barely get my tiptoes on the deck (2012 GSA with ESA etc), bought a Sergeant low seat and it barely helps, I have dropped the bike twice when nearly at a standstill because I could not get my left foot down quick enough!

Is there someting I can do to the ESA?
Is there an even lower seat I can buy? or do I bite the bullet and get a smaller bike - Don't want to go down that road though as I love the GSA.

Any info appreciated.

Get a smaller bike before you kill yourself or even worse someone else.

As the major GSA riding short arse on the site I'm 5 6" and 11 stone and I handle my bike with very few problems, couple of drops but nothing I couldn't pick right back up, laugh off and get back on. :pullface

I'm really tip toes, so much so I had to take off the metal toes proectors on my boots so I have at least a little grip. I ride with a BMW standard Low seat, and nothing else.

Get a side stand hoof if jayc makes a new batch makes it much much easier to get the bike up right, and fill it with less gas (about a 3rd to half way in my average).

Turn the flipping ESA off and dial in the bikes suspension to suit your height, you will need a second person to help you so you can stay in the seat. Then leave the ESA alone as I've seen people drop their ride at lights funny as hell. :blast

NOW TOP TIP, get some of that sticky car vinyl wrap and cover the bits of your bike that hit the road, that way you don't scratch up your ride too badly.

And as I've said before IF need be put your panniers on and load them up it will give you about 2 inches. Now all you have to do is enjoy the ride and simply plan your stops a little bit better, look at the road surface a little more and remember what side you favor when stopping on hills. I live near Matlock Derbyshire so It's all hills, country lanes and mud covered roads so I do know a little about what I'm on about before people start to flame me.

Don't worry you will get used to doing it on the bike and it becomes part of your riding technique after a bit, I sometimes have to park my bike where the terrain dictates and not exactly where I want to be hey I ride a GSA bitches.

Build up your slow speed confidence.

Join your local IAM group and do the dexterity training, aka slow riding morning

It builds your confidence in low speed manovers,

Using clutch n rear brake,

Shows you how to almost stop without putting a foot down n ride at walking pace around obsticles.

Jake - the Kahedo/Wunderlich/Touratech Low seat is a great help.

(all made by Kahedo) - they are lower and narrower, so don't kick your thighs out so much as the standard seat.

But - a S/H one on Ebay will typically cost around £200, but if not suitable - you an resell for the same price.

I believe that the BMW Low seat is pretty shoddy build-quality and not so effective.

I have a set of Hyperpro lowering springs for a GSA with ESA suspension sat in my Garage. Drop me a PM if interested. I'll let you have them for a good price as I bought them from Daffy on the site and used his spring compressor to fit them. I had them on my bike briefly due to a short inside leg but then went back to standard springs after having my seat reworked.

Fitting is easy enough, takes a couple of hours to remove the shocks and then compress the springs and swap them over, or you could get a dealer (or better still a suspension agent) to do it for you.

Get this seat, better than the BMW Low + Daytona M Star boots adds about 20-25mm to your height (also you can now walk into a bar just like John Wayne) these go together quite well.

The other obvious matter is to give thought to where your feet are going to set down - common sense, very obvious but.. also as your a tad shorter make sure your trouser bottoms don't catch on your spikey metal footpegs (Bury St Edmunds wet day 2011 ouch!!).

Have you considered a GS rather than a GSA? I'm 6' but a little short in the leg and I find even the GS can catch me out occasionally. I'd rather just get on with riding than worrying about whether I could reach the ground every time I stopped!
 
Hi, I had the same problem before I got the B.M.W. low seat that helped, then I bought the thickest soled boot I could find and that gave me another inch and more confidence, at the end of the day it's all about how confident you feel. I hope this helps.
 
I'm 5 8 and had the GSA. It's not necessarily the seat height but the width that counts. I had the BMW low seat with some of the width removed by Tony Archer. This worked together with boots of a decent sole thickness, not flat foot both sides but once stopped I tended to shuffle a bit to the left to give a flat foot with the right foot free for the brake.

Don't get me wrong, I was never blasé when coming to a halt and when parking, but it just becomes good practice and 2nd nature.
 
I slide to one side or the other on the seat and put one foot down on whichever side suits the terrain... if I tried to put both feet on the floor at the same time I wouldn't reach it!!
