Hi all, I've just had a 1200 twin cam adv triple black 2012 and wondered what these two plugs are for? The owner before me used a sat nav, I think photo 1 could be for that but photo 2??? I'd like to connect my sat nav hopefully using plug in photo 1, if so, what type of plug might this be?

Photo 1 is looking down the fork legs from the clocks left hand side.

Photo 2 is looking up fork legs left hand side, and is right by the horn.

Photo 1 is the one for the sat nav , if you buy the fly lead to wire your own sat nav you'll see that it'll only plug into the correct plug.
The one in photo 2 not sure, possibly for the oil cooler fan which I think some RT s have but again not sure.

I would guess that number 2 is the connector that would go the carbon cannister, if it were fitted. It mounts in the cut out into the petrol tank. US of A and other countries.

Sorry to say something different, but having been through the same thought process I thought I would mention that I think it's a bad idea to connect accessories via the canbus - even though it is a simple and hence attractive option.

When I purchased my 2008 GS new, I had a Zumo fitted. BMW fitted it direct off the battery, which is what the Garmin fitting instructions specify. I also had an Autocom fitted and BMW fitted that on a relay which was wired to the accessory socket.

The reason, as I understand it, is that non-BMW accessories can be problematic for the canbus system. I have wired a USB socket into the bike and did so direct to the battery. I considered adding a relay, but I never plug anything in without the bike running and it's on a trickle charger, so I didn't bother.

As I said, sorry to say something different. I also may be wrong, or at least overly cautious.

What andy79 says, the socket is there specifically to power a gps and switches of with yhe ignition. If you have wired a usb socket direct to your battery surly it will draw power continuously whether there is something plugged in or not.?

If there is something drawing power plugged into it, yes - not otherwise (it doesn't leak out)...

Do NOT wire a Garmin Zumo 220 to the canbus socket with the oem garmin power lead - it will flatten the battery even with the satnav actually removed.

Ask me how I know .........;)

There is no switching mechanism in the usb output which makes think the bike side of the circuitry is always live. Not a big drain but still active?

well i had a dual usb socket on my last gs, wired into the under seat canbus switched din plug. No battery drain with nothing plugged in.

A simple way to check, if what you have plugged into the bike anywhere but the battery direct doesnt switch off after 30 or so seconds after the ignition is turned off then itll drain the battery.

That's what I was saying! Billy10 said he didn't trust the canbus switched outputs and had wired his usb charger straight to the battery.
