While on my tour of Scotland got to the hotel at Maillag to find a fair amount of oil was liberally spread down the left fork and what looks like a split seal.

There’s no chance of me getting it fixed and I have 6 days left and 1,000 miles. Am I mad to keep going????

Any ideas or tips much appreciated.

For info… 2003 R1150GSA with 62K

TIA.

It's an easy fix and can be done without taking the wheel off with fairly basic tools. If there is a possibility of the oil getting onto the brake disc or into the caliper then you need to get it fixed urgently. If not keep an eye on it and you might get it home. The loss of oil on it's own is not a massive cause for concern as most of the damping is done by the spring.

Tie some rags around the slider and another lower down around the fork leg
Secure with zip ties
It will be fine
Forks only control steering and not suspension

STOP ACTING LIKE A BABY !

wrap it up with cloth and some tape.

ps remember , you are a rufty tufty adventure bike rider , not a fucking namby pamby twat.

Not sure if this will work but you may find the linked document useful if you tackle it yourself.

Thanks all. Good idea about the rags.

I’m going to ride it up Ben Nevis tomorrow being the adventurous type I am!!!!

Thanks for the info and reassurance. Much appreciated.

Did 4,000km like that in Morocco.
Afterwards, most of the oil was still in the slider. Though it did not appear like that at the time.

I'm in Angus and have a few spare new fork seals that fit the 1150GSA
Not sure what your routing is but I can post a seal to an agreed destination OR we could meet-up +/- 50 miles radius of Kirriemuir, I've got everything required to change the seal :thumb

Thanks so much for the offer but we’re on the west coast. Currently in Maillag and heading to Skye, Applecross and further north there after.

Really long but given the previous comments I feel a little happier carrying on. Cheers.

Pack it with tissue paper bog roll under the outer seal and carry on regardless

Popped a seal on the Rainbow Road in NZ, did this and fixed it properly on my return to the UK having ridden many more miles on gravel roads. Ride on, you have a minor issue..

My 1150R seal has been leaking for 2 months. I’ll get around to changing it soon.... and I doubt it’s your seal that’s “split”, it’s more likely to be the outer dust cover, the seal is under the cover further down inside the fork leg.

Rode from Western Sahara to UK with similar leak on my 02 1150 GS…..just bandaged the fork leg with cut-off top of a small plastic water bottle, inverted and held in place with a cable tie.

No issue. Happy travels!
