I was on my way today to Mullingar from Dublin and at the toll plasa i noticed the bolt that goes into the hand grip, to hold the hand protector in place was coming loose. I screwed it in as tight as i could by hand while riding. About 17km outside outside Mullingar my bike died and came to a stop. No indication of anything wrong on the on-board computer, nothing overheating, full of juice. I also noticed that the bolt for the hand protector was gone. Would anyone have any idea what could have caused the bike to die on me, what could have caused this. Had the recovery people pick up the bike. I bought it 2 weeks ago up north at BMW Motorrad. It came with a 3 month dealer warranty as they guy said the manufacturer's warranty expired. I called BMW emergency services today and they said the manufacturer's warranty expired yesterday, the day before the bike died. Does anyone think that they would still cover the issue if it expired 1 day ago. Also, do you know if the dealer warranty will cover he bike to be fixed in Dublin.

Any advise on these issues would be welcome. Am so "&%^**&* off that it happened on such a great day to get out on the bike

Now Duffy's BMW have come back to say that the bike dropped a valve on the left side and made a nice hole in the piston. They said it should be ready end of next week. Does anyone else know of this happening, especially 1 day after the manufacturer's warranty expires. Can I or do I have a right to insist that they extend the warranty because of what happened? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE WELCOME....What warranty do they give for the parts and work done to the bike? What happens now if the work that they done causes other issues, if the left piston etc is replaced and something causes the right one to go.......

IMO BMW will pick up the tab on a goodwill issue. However its up to your supplying dealer to sort it as its still in the 3 month warranty you got with the bike. BTW 3 months seems a bit stingy as thats the legal minimun. I thought pre-owned stock from BMW dealers always came with a minimun of 6 months cover.

Handguard bolt should have loctite.

Ask about BMW extended warranty costs £367 But worth every penny if you have a 1200:thumb

Extended warranty starts as soon as the manufacturers one finish's so if it's just ran out they should be able to provide you with the cover

12 months warranty on

BMW Approved pre owned bikes, maybe special rules for scotland :nenau

Can I or do I have a right to insist that they extend the warranty because of what happened?
None whatsoever.

What warranty do they give for the parts and work done to the bike?
None if they paid for it all under warranty/goodwill repair.
If you paid for the parts they carry a manufacturers warranty. 12 months?
That is ONLY on the replaced parts and ONLY if you paid for them tho.

What happens now if the work that they done causes other issues, if the left piston etc is replaced and something causes the right one to go.......
Nothing they have done will cause that.
If it goes you can try and get a good will repair done, but if they don't want to do it, TS.
It pays to have a warranty.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

No idea about handguard.

ALl the dropped valves I've heard of have been right hand cylinders, supposedly because of oil starvation issues.

You have a three month warranty from dealer, so they should sort it completely. If they want to take it up with BMW, that's up to them.

make noises to BuMW about all the forums you are a member of and that you will make it a priority to let everybody know about a nearly new bike dropping a valve 1 daya fter warranty and BuMW not interested. Do a search here, lots of Tossers have had work done on 'goodwill', which is another word for BuMW culpability in my book...

dont let them away with it:thumb2

A bit of bad luck there but sh-- happens. Dont let it put you off the bike if BMW are sorting it.
Try to negotiate the longest warranty you can and enjoy the bike.
The hand guard bolt is a one off BMW's are well bolted together using the finest quality nuts and bolts I have seen on any bike I have owned.

Bought my 06 pre owned GS1200ADV from Southport Super Bikes earlier this year, it came with the remainder of BMW warranty and then S S B's made the rest up to a 12 month warranty.

May need to use soon, every now and then I get the ABS red warning triangle up, brakes still work, sometimes goes out on it's own, other times I have to switch off ignition and re start!!!
