If you look carefully I’ve got Vario panniers & a Givi top box…..slight touch of OCD creeps in that they “don’t match”.
there are a few Vario top boxes on fleabay but my question is, do I need a special “top box plate” or does the Vario top box simply click in to the existing GS standard framework? TIA

There is a "plate" and a bracket that links the plate to the threaded holes just above the tail/brake lamp.

the vario one will be lots smaller - but looks much better

its only a single lid box, and even that's a push, I couldn't get many lids to sit upright, lids mostly had to be on their side.....
note they altered the design, early ones fitted slightly differently to the base - mine was later type, but how it mounts is a scary joke - nothing really holds it on

one bod makes a bracket you bolt on to stop the pannier cases bouncing about - worth getting one if you plan to fill them up - its basically a stainless stick that jams between them on a pretty bracket you just fit and forget

Size normally matters 🙄 but in this case it’s purely down to aesthetics & little else.

I can't help with the exam question I'm afraid but I'd change it too if it were my bike. IMO it'll look better with the vario box although they are smaller than your current one.

u want this - they all need them

early bikes.... update bracket to suite later vario top box (not the LC top boxes!)
