I am trying to establish if vario topbox has a removable mounting plate to attach it to the rack?

It seems I might be able to use my own holan top box and ali boxes, if Holan ever get around to answering my enquiry!

The pictures on their website are rather limited and dont really help, although it looks to me that their rack plate may work

As I have not yet got the bike ( due next week) and we are still in fecking lockdown here, looking for some ideas, thanks

This is the rack I hope to use for the boxes

I hadn’t noticed before but it does seem to have a removable plate.

It's more than a mounting plate. There's a locking mechanism in the box which works with the red release levers.

I was thinking more of the rack on the bike than the bottom of the top case, I am trying to establish if the piocture on holans website shows the correct shape to allow it to be fitted to the bike rack....hope thats a bit clearere than my first attempt. I have some photos of the rack on a bike but its fitted with a vario top box and there seems to be a sort of intermediate plate in between top case and bike rack!

You can't fit that Vario topbox to the metal Adventure type rack shown in the Holan link.
You could fit it to the plastic rack on a GS but you need an adaptor plate to replace the black plastic insert which BMW fit as standard. The standard insert serves no purpose other than to support the silver plastic.

You do not need to remove the bottom of the topbox . As already mentioned, it contains the mechanism to hold it onto the rack....remove at your peril.

Generally speaking, the Vario luggage is for the standard GS.

The metal luggage is for the GSA version.

You can fit metal luggage to the GS if you fit the GSA metal racks.

I have a Holan top box which clips onto the BMW metal rack. No adaptor plate needed.

As far as I know the racks in your Holan link do not accept the BMW metal panniers. They are for the Holan panniers exclusively.

Thats excellent info thanks!
what I want to do is simply switch over my holan boxes to the GS from the ktm 1290, but holan are not great at answering in detail, or even answering quickly at all!
I have the nomade pro top case size L which I really like, the 31L and 38L panniers are good for longer trips but are less regularly used.
As you have a holan topcase on the bmw rack, can you clarify if the lock shown on their picture (link above) is the sole securing mechanism for the topcase, as the topcase is currently bolted down on my KTM frame via a holan mounting plate?
cheers

Yes it is the sole fastening point.

It locates on the rack in the same way as the BMW box. The lock you refer to has a claw shape that wraps around the rack tube and locks into place.

In a nutshell you need the three metal racks to fit to your bike.

On advantage of using the Holan pannier racks is that you don't need to replace the pillion footrest hangers with the GSA type.

Thats great thanks much clearer now whats required, takes a lot of the uncertainty out of dealing with Holan!:thumb

Hmm, tried phoning Holan and no reply... will try their enquiry form again and if no response may have to rethink this!
