Help needed - northern Spain

Hi all hope somebody can help got an 02 1150 dead by the side of the road - all was
fine then everything died all electrics died with no warning now left with no lights no nothing. In northern Spain on way to hotel in canvas de onis which is where bike will probably be recovered to. Anybody know of a bike garage/dealer in the area long shot I know but at least it's something to pass the time. Oh and it's raining - but apart from that the holiday started fine .........

It has to be the battery or the connections.

i am no expert,but i do know that the wires that go around the headstock do break after time ,it could be either the live or earth wire .
my old 1150 rockster had a similar issue ,it was steptoe that pointed me in the right direction

Thanks for the quick replays guys - especially detailed mr jersey GS - as said it has to be battery or a break somewhere - got a quick forum response and the rain has stopped so all in all its looking up lol

Did a couple of searches for breakdown recovery in Cangas de Onís but searches came back with nothing of any help hope you get fixed up please let us know how you get on. BTW Motos Juan S.A. appears to be a Kawasaki garage but better than nothing I'm assuming its closed though this time of night.

Have you tried phoning the Hotel they may be able to get you a recovery truck?

Any blown fuses??

Thanks for your help, recovery is here now - and the policia civil - and still civil atm. Recovery driver is from cangas and is a friend of the guy you suggested - small town so he knows him and he recons he is a good mechanic so looking about as good as it gets will let you know how it all turns out. It is responses like this that restore my faith in this forum.

Ok guys bit more info - jump start bike all good runs smooth as soon as I kick side stand up and engine dies as before and no ignition lights all electrics dead any ideas?

check wiring on side stand or by pass it if you can such a pain in the ass

You need to be a bit more specific..

When you have the ignition on to jump start it are there ignition lights on ?

When you say "all the electrics dead" if you switch the ignition off and back on do the ignition/instrument lights come back on.

Battery is totally goosed, and won't even act as a buffer on idle? If you can get a meter on the battery and see what the charging voltage is, as soon as it starts on the jumper?

That would at least confirm that the charging circuit was okay (circa 14.3v)

Ok so on the key all lights dead no ignition lights etc. Connect up emergency battery pack to jump start bike all lights on dash come on. Bike starts on first press of the starter and runs fine when battery pack removed . With bike still in neutral, still running fine as soon as sidestand is raised bike dies instantly and no lights on dash again. With battery pack re-attached,in neutral and sidestand up, dash lights up again but on start turns over sparks battery pack won't start and battery pack gets very hot and was diconnected right away. Local mechanic suggest battery dead
so now have battery off to take to him to get replacement.

Thanks al that's what I am thinking will try with new battery it's only a couple of years
old and had no previous problems starting running etc but it's probably best place to start

Does the 1150 usually start and idle with the sidestand down? on my 1100 it will only start (or turn over) with the sidestand up, and the switch kills the engine instantly when the sidestand is deployed.

I know your troubles are deeper than this, but if the wiring has been altered from standard at some point to allow the bike to run with the sidestand down, it may be worth checking.

Bike is designed to start or tick over In neutral with side stand down the switch that cuts engine only when gear is engged

thanks Jeremy. either the 1100 is different or mine is goosed, as it won't start regardless of in gear or neutral, unless the side stand is up. good luck getting it sorted Jav.

Hi guys- well as we all thought 'twas the battery. Ordered from Juan the garage man yesterday afternoon arrived noon today and fitted it by one - started on the button and it kept going with the sidestand up! so happy days and all for €90 so apart from a slight delay not too bad. Once again everyone thanks for all the input and words of support now it's time to get on with the holiday!
