I recently fitted some driving lights to my bike and needed a switch to activate them, so instead of buying an autoswitch, I decided to make a one myself, I've used the same technology for operating the unit as BMW use for controlling the indicator unit, so theres nothing Heath Robinson about the design and my background is Electrical/Electronics so there’s nothing dodgy about the implementation either.
I need somebody who’s looking to fit an autoswitch to test one of my units for me. Dik, from Nottingham, has already agreed to test one; so I’m looking for somebody else to test another.
The unit’s has an automatically resetting circuit breaker to protect the circuit and will drive a 40A relay directly. Its approx 1.5” square by 0.75” deep and is waterproof.
I haven’t seen an Autoswitch but from what I can tell from their website the operation is similar but not quite identical. After the Indicator switch is depressed my unit will switch after 1 sec where the Autoswitch needs the switch depressing between .8 and 1.5 secs to operate. The outputs are also slightly different in operation; my understanding is that it is possible to “blow” the Autoswitch by connecting 12V to the output; this is not a problem with mine.
If I get the “thumbs up” from the testers I’ll run a few up for anybody who is interested.
