Just got on her to go to work and noticed a smell, checked and the shaft looked wet near the rhs cylinder. Rubbed it and it smelt of petrol then noticed it spraying out of two pipes above. Will try and post pic in a min...any clues?

Sounds like the petrol overflow. Have you just filled up (on the mainstand) and then parked up a short while later (on the sidestand) ?

Is it the two pipes that are just below the tank and 'disappear' into the engine?

Check the rubber for signs of cracking or splitting. Do you have the Quick Disconnects? Black or white usually - the BMW one looks like this

If so check the plastic hasn't split and that they are properly connected! They need to make a good click noise when pushed closed. While you've got them off check the rubber 'o' ring inside the quick disconnect.

It's all I can think of off the top of my head...

Let's see the pics :)

Also:

Check the rubber to metal pipe connections. They have a crimped metal clip.

Mine p*ssed out of there one day. New clips sorted it but short-term fix is some pressure on the clips.

Thanks all, the crimped metal clips seem to be the things....(lost my net connection at home and managed to borrow Mrs Beefy's car to get to work, hence no pics..blah blah)
After I got changed and was putting the bike away I fired her up again and nothing came out? Had a close look and there does seem to be some slight perishing of the rubber which goes over the metal pipe and before the clips. I'll have to have another look tonight when I get home.

Thanks again.

'Zactly what happened to mine. Started-up, strong smell of petrol. Saw fuel pouring over gearbox from the metal to rubber joints. Switched off. Started-up again - leak stopped. Crimped the clips and then got them replaced.

No repeat to date.

We live in a strange parallel universe. Exactly the same here this morning but petrol seems to be from higher on up the pipe from under the fuel tank.

One bike in the garage, and for the first time in over 6 months one Volvo driven to work :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

Volvo  I'm not sure who had the worst deal...I had to drive a pink Daihatsu...although I keep telling the boys it's Choral in colour!

Took off the pipe at the Quick Connect end (nearer the tank) and managed to twist and push it on a bit harder and also then squeezed the crimped end on a bit harder...not very technical but it seems to have done the job for now. No big trips lined up so might just get them looked at / replaced at next service in 1500 miles.

Cheers again

I had this on an '03 adventure soon after a re call for a dealer check for this problem. pipes and and clip replaced under warranty even though out of warranty date well done Bluebell at Crewe.

the pipe was a double skin rubber with a woven material in between this was where the fuel was coming from in an underpressure spray, as if the inner rubber had been corrupted and the fuel was tracking via the weave.
