Could anyone help me with infomation regarding a battery for my 2008 F650 GS. I need to know which battery it needs and what amp hour rating etc etc etc. BMW just quoted me 130 quid for a replacement battery (£105 for the battery and £25 for fitting) which is "NOT included in your warranty" which I really dont have!!! Also anyone got any prices for a gel battery, and if so whats the price difference and are they really any better than the standard battery. ALSO if I can I'd like to find a replacement battery that has the same or better cranking ability than the original., err but if I'm lucky without the BMW price.

I might be lucky and find that after a longish run it is ok, but to be honest I dont think it is.

I suppose i should thank my lucky stars it's not a much bigger and more expensive battery I need, like maybe one for a r1200GS, Feck knows how much one of those would be !!!!

Maybe I'll actually get to ride it soon instead of tinkering with/having it tinkered with....

Sorry chaps I gotta go im about to scream!!!!!!

Any info greatly appreciated...

P.S. Oh yeah by the way please keep any comments constructive, id hate to tell anyone else what they could do with their feckin paddle....:comfort:augie:bounce1

P.P.S. Just a thought. My Bike is fitted with the standard BMW alarm, Might this be killing it. Oh and the bike is stored in a cold ish aircraft stylee hangar

Hi Mark, don't cover under warranty what a "joke". Im in the same situation as you annoyed with how poor BMW service is. Wont replace my head bearings after they destroyed them by over tightening. Plus side mate my F800GS has the factory alarm activated all the time and it doesn't effect the battery so doubt that has caused it. But like you said its been at Bahnstormers for a while so i bet it just needs a damn good run. If not and your down in the Hampshire area there is a really good chap near myself who owns a motocross shop and i'm sure he could get you a cheap battery! Or maybe you have one near you? Worth a try as they are usually a lot cheaper than BMW.

Hope this helps mate.. :thumb

A really good optimiser charger might recover the battery.

If you need a new battery, based on my experience in the last couple of weeks with the cheaper battery option from Motorworks I would strongly suggest you buy the OEM version.

The OEM battery is no cheaper from Motorworks but as Johnny says you certainly don't need to pay anyone £25 of your children's inheritance to fit a battery.

£25 to fit a battery ! They are having a laugh. I imagine the 650 is similar to the my 800. 4 screws for the panel, 2 screws into the steering yoke, two screws on the bit of plastic to hold the battery down, and the 2 posting screws. 10 minutes, job done

Start to finish, including checking, taking to the workshops, returning from workshops ... must be an hours job?

£25.00 ??

It's not a charity out there :rob

Bloody right, if you are too lazy to fit the thing yourself, that's the minimum I'd charge.:thumb2

Dont forget to make a temporary connection before unbolting the battery. If you forget the service counter will loose track. Im assuming it defaults to " service now" if the power is lost. The dealer will probably charge £25 just to reset this.
Busters are advertising a gel filled HD battery on ebay for £45.00.

Standard battery is a 12V 14AH AGM ( sealed Absorbant Glass Mat).

My bike is in a cold garage and also have the BMW alarm, I also think the two combined with not regular riding is a combined downfall.
the alarm just like a TV on stand by taking power!

I got a same BMW replacement that went the same way!

the standard BMW charger does not charge back from flat where as Tim stated the optimates do!

Now I have a dongle direct to battery external and ready to hook up once back in the garage after each ride (on the optimate) the two green lights so far has ment it fires up first time every time even if left for weeks.

Good luck what ever you get :thumb :D

If it is still under warranty just call roadside assistance. Friend did this and got a new battery.

I have a battery that stood for two and a half years outside on a bike,so for a "test" I stuck it on the Optimate.Initially it came up red(battery knackered)but I gave it a second go and it started to take a charge. Now it starts the bike no problem, and it does crank it for a fair time before dying. Can you borrow an Optimate and give it a good charge?

ps,Mark couldn`t beat Battery master price but I`m sure someone will :D

New optimate has a turbo mode for really dead batteries FYI.
