My front brake is squealling, is it back to the dealers or is there a quick fix?

Max

You could take out each of the mounting bolts (one at a time) and apply a small amount of coppergrease. This helped reduce the squealing on my brakes, for a while at least. (2500 miles, however its starting to come back)

I believe that there is a more permanent "dealer fix" available, so I'm going to mention it next time I'm passing the dealers.

PS I understand it's not a serious problem, but its bloody annoying when your stopping in a busy street and half the punters turn to see what the racket is.

Bloody annoying on a high-quality bike. I meant to mention it (aka moan like feck) when I had it serviced at SLM, but forgot to. But they must have done something off their own back because it doesn't screech anymore.

The dealer told me that they had removed the "rodent" from my front brake at the 6k service... however at just under 10k the little pest seems to be coming back... :(

Not sure if they did the full enhancement mod or just cleaned the callipers/brakes up. Either way will mention again at the next service. :)

My brakes sounded like a taxi for most of the summer, but now they've gone quiet.
Mind you I did wash it the other day.

There is a modification that can be done under warranty to cure the squeal. Your dealer should be able to sort it out for you. I believe it involves shimming out the discs from the wheels.

The fix has a number: 29/2005 dated 28.04.05. The shims on both sides of the discs are replaced with new rubber-coated ones. Or so my dealer told me anyway. I'll have it done under warranty. A rainy day...

Had mine done last month on the 6k service .New discs with different spacers and new pads .FOC :thumb

Did this and worked 100%

2500mls later and still no squeal

Tried grease to back of pads first and that had no effect

Applied grease to the hat shaped washers holding the discs sparingly and torqued each bolt so that they are equal, Not sure how critical that is, but makes engineering sense to minimise vibration?

As others have said, there is now a dealer fix for this issue
:D

Can confirm that BM do a fix for this. Had mine done and to date have remaind silent. So take it back. It is not a recall but a quality enhancement so the dealer said. so you must ask for it. This is due to the fact that not all bikes the squeal?

That's nice to know as mine are squealin' too. Quality enhancement!! Must remember that :D

Another possible solution is the chamfer the leading edges of the brake pads with a file. Did this to mine (and the dealer redid it at the last service) and the brake squeal isn't totally cured but it is much reduced.

Thanks very much for the replies. It'll be a trip to the dealers as soon as I can bear parting with it.

that's bodging take it back and have the washers changed to the teflon coated ones now fitted.

THERE is a specific guidance from BMW to change some small round things (i do not know the english word) that goes to the front brake disc, around 12 pieces, that stop this sound !

worked fine on me !!
