Hi

As a newbie looking to join the gang I have recently looked at a 2008 1200 GSA. However, although the bike seems relatively cheap, it’s in quite a state considering it’s only showing 9000 odd miles.

The bike has lots of corrosion (engine casings, engine bolts, exhaust etc), worn handle bar grips, cracks round the mounting points of the screen, rounded screws in the swing arm pivot pinion, missing hose clips from the right hand carb inlet, a drive shaft coupling rubber boot that isn’t fitted properly and is in a general mess. It also has only the first service in the book and the MOTs show very little mileage over the last two years.

Like I say I’m a newbie when it comes to BM's so you’ll have to excuse my ignorance. I appreciate that any abused bike will show its wear, however; I would be really grateful for any views that you guys may have (e.g. are there any clues that might warrant the mileage) and / or, any advice that you may be able to give.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the site Paul :thumb

It's a buyer's market at the moment, and by the sound of the one you're looking at you could do a lot better.....

I've bought at least 10 GS's on here... and if I was looking for another the only place i'd bother looking is the GS bikes for sale and wanted on UKGSer :thumb

+1
Better to forget mileage with these bikes really Just go for condition plus extras fitted

Go for condition, condition, condition, I've just picked up an R1200gsa 2006 model in mint condition.
Hopefully it'll prove a winner, I try to buy the best condition at the lowest mileage at a price I can afford !

Something doesn't sound quite right with that bike so i would have a look elsewhere. There are plenty of really good ones for sale on here and in the usual press. Don't worry about mileage and you are better going for a higher mileage bike with lots of extra's and a full history than a scabby low mileage bike. 50k is nothing on these bikes and there are many examples out there with double that which are great bikes, mine included.

worn handlebar grips? That alone suggests high mileage (or very abrasive hands/gloves) and possible clocking. Sounds like a nail. As others have said, plenty around if you can bide your time and move fast when you see the one you want at the price you want.
