If your shifting to first and your moving to quickly you'll grind the gears.

If you want to get it into first and the engine is hot (or cold sometimes) pressdown on the gear lever and let the clutch out slightly and it'll slide in.

Here's hoping ...

... it's the gear lever, and not the gearbox. They are a bit prone to collecting road crap and gradually become difficult to shift. Do a search on here for the exploded diagram but basically just strip the linkages grease & replace; it's a 10 min job :augie Once you've found the little feckin circlips that is

Usually the gear linkage is dry. The actual lever itself not the rosejoint.

Undo the bolt securing the lever to the footrest hanger remove it and the bush inside and grease them. Reassemble .

Hi Neil, correct me if I am wrong, but if I remember, the bolt won't come out with the standard exhaust cat in place???

yeah tried the soft approach, hard approach - it would not go in to gear, moved bike slightly forward tried the clutch.
gears would not budge
looks like ill have to have a go at stripping down etc
thanks all
