I've recently bought a Zumo 550 with City Navigator 2010.30 installed, but I don't have any software on discs. I have downloaded Mapsource from the Garmin site and I have also downloaded a 2010.30 torrent folder to use to plan maps etc. on my PC. It is the Europe City Navigator folder and it's over 5Gb so it should do the trick. Now that I have the folder I don't know what to do with it. :nenau Do I extract it, with what programme?

Mapsource should open any Garmin files.

But you maybe struggling with locked files, as Garmin want paying for there stuff.

I presume this is a second hand Zumo as a new one comes with City Navigator disc which includes Mapsource. If this is the case go back to the seller and ask for the disc.

Plus as earlier answer, downloading an illegal torrent won't easily solve the problem. Most are disc images from someone elses install and although it's quite easy to get Mapsource to recognise it is there, every time you use it you just get a warning that a map is not unlocked and you won't be able to see it.

Bite the bullet and register the Zumo on the Garmin site. Then splash out £75.00 on lifetime map updates. You will always have the latest maps and can bask in the glow of operating legally.

If its second hand the chances are someone has already registered it but a call to Garmin can solve that.

not strictly true.... the mouse generator unlocker works very well.

or just wait a week or 2 after release and get the unlocked versions which work on any install or unit - true plug and play

Excuse my ignorance as I'm new to this and just trying to understand what I need to do. The map on the Zumo works fine and it is a 2nd. hand unit and I haven't been supplied with any discs. I would like to experiment with route maps on my PC, so I downloaded a file, but it won't open. I'm not really keen on spending a lot of money on software updates as the software on the Zumo is quite new, I would just like to experiment with the routing.

Few of us are keen to spend money but that is hardly a legitimate reason for buying cheap second hand and then stealing the software to get it running.

I think you're missing the point, the unit is running very well, I only want the CD so that I can play with the software on my computer.

No I am not missing the point. You wanted to save money by getting an incomplete second hand unit and got what you paid for - an incomplete unit. You did not buy the complete package but now you are trying to justify stealing the software to make the package complete and use this forum to ask people to help you break the law.

If you are so sure you are right why don't you just phone Garmin and ask them to send you the missing software for free. I am sure they will understand when you tell them you just want to play with it on your computer.
