Hi,

I am trying to put together a video that comprises of five 30mg files. When I import these videos into MM it creates about 20 seperate clips for each of the five files. Can I change a setting so it just brings the five 30mg files? I dont want them to be split up any more than they are already.

Cheers

Just load them onto the MM storyboard in sequence and without using any transitions and you'll get a seamless join.

You can stop MM doing this...

When you import the files into MM, when the dialogue box opens up, look at the bottom and UNCHECK the "Create clips for video files" box. Each of your segments will then come in as one clip. Look in "Help" under "Importing video files and clip detection" - under "Using Windows Movie Maker", then "Importing existing digital media files".

And if you're considering using another, more sophisticated editing programme, I recommend Sony Movie Studio (esp. the Platinum version). After enduring years of flaky software with Pinnacle Studio, I won't be going back... Info here.

As it happens, I use Sony Vegas 5 + DVD (I can't afford v6! :( ). Although it's quite hard to learn, the results are light years better than Windows MM.

The issues that I had with MM are its inability to create DVDs and the drop-off of picture quality.

Stuff like picture-in-picture and 5.1 cinema sound are amazing bonuses.

Full version?

I'm using Movie Studio 6, which is the cut down version of the full Vegas programme (which I can't afford either!). There is (of course) a new version 7 now available, but only in Platinum form. Still, the upgrade cost is modest and if you're shooting HD (can't afford that either!)I reckon it could be a steal.
To be honest, Movie Studio can do everything I need ... and then a heck of a lot more! It isn't that easy to use first off, but I put together a 'Ken Burns' type pan-and-zoom movie and the ability to control the image movement was fantastic. I still maintain that its stability is one of it's best features. Pinnacle Studio looks nice, but it's VERY flaky underneath.

Thanks for the suggestions. It sounds like Sony Vega is worth a try and I might be able to get my hands on a copy so will give it a go. For now I'll stick with Windows MM and try the tips suggested above.
