This is SlowJohn's partner calling for help.

John and mate have now headed for the arctic circle but John's GS1150 Adventure (2003) has a headlight out.

he has asked me to look in the books to find out where the fuse is (they've checked the bulb ;-)) - an easy enough task, even for a blonde I thought.

But....the fuse box doesn't mention a fuse for the dipped headlight or even the headlight unless I'm missing something - can anyone help me on this please??

Has just taken me ages to find out how to use this site so fingers crossed I can figure out how to get replies :):)

Thanks for that - have sent by text and hope he gets signal! They are currently on a ferry and are hoping to be allowed back to the car deck in the morning to fix it.

Hi again

Any more ideas?

Message I have got back is:
'All fuses under seat are ok - cannot find a fuse or relay location for headlights and instrument back lights. There should be one somewhere on the bike'

Headlight and instrument panel back lights are out.

All ideas greatly received

And I thought I was going to get 2 weeks peace!!

Try this....

Have just pulled every fuse and relay on my 1150GS and the only item that affects the headlights and instrument lights is the relay situated at the front of the fuse box second one in from the left hand side of the bike.

Hope that is of some help....:D

PS. In Fanums diagram it is the relay marked "Load Relief"

Think you will find that relay is the load shedding relay that removes unneeded load from the battery when you press the start button.

Didn't try....

starting the engine, but with that relay removed neither headlights or intrument lights would work.....:D

Thank you so much for your posts. Fuse 8 apparently wasn't spare after all - I can't say I understand much of what I've been told but seems user error could have been the problem :toungincheek

They are now across Denmark and get the ferry to Norway tomorrow.....

Thanks again

Thanks all, John here again.

Here's the chain of events of stupidity on my part.

Before going on trip check fuses.
8, 9 & 10 are spare according to the fuse box cover and the manual
I decide to swap these three around to give a better mix of spares
End up putting a 5 amp in position 8
It turns out 8 is dipped headlight (but I don't know this yet) and blows because I've replaced a 10 with a 5.
Get onto ferry and notice dipped headlight is out.
Check fuses 1 to 7, all ok
Check bulb (HID), ok
Ferry engineer downloads wiring diagram for us, no sign of a fuse on headlight so it must be a wiring fault right?
Start looking for broken wires and find no problems
Check fuses again and notice 8 has blown (which I still think is a spare), replace it and light comes on (funny that!)
So now we know, 8 is dipped headlight and 9 is main beam.

All told, this took two of us about 5 hours, luckily DFDS were unbelievably helpful letting us work on the bike, lending us a circuit tester, giving us wire etc, etc.

I'm very very grateful for the help here (again!) and very very embarrassed to have wasted your time.

Thanks again, or sorry, you decide :augie
