Aggggh - it's been one of those nights......

I added a few strap securing lugs to the optional BM rack, all painted up & ready to fit this evening - spimples......

Apart from one of the stainless studs sjeared flush in the subframe......

Ok, I'll remove the upper rear cowl to assess the situation - ooh, it apears to be secured from underneath......

Oh, the rear fender needs removing to access the studs or whatever is securing the centre of the upper cowl......

BUT the lower rear fender won't come off as it seems to be atta hed to a central steel clip of some kind. I can get the lower cowl to move rearwards about 1/2" but not detach.

Please help, how are the lower & upper cowl attached?everything is soaking in plus gas, the garage floor is covered in muck, crap & oil.
Then there is the issue of drilling a stainless bolt out of alloy.......

Just taking a breather before I lose it altogether!

Cheers, Phil
X country by the way....

Phil,

i feel your pain!

had a similar issues when the seat catch on my xchallenge where it got clogged with mud and wouldn't open. :blast

Couldn't see any other way of getting the rear end apart either...

Not exactly sure which thread has sheared for you but on my XCountry on of the grab handle bolts sheared when a H&B rack was installed. It was flush too and I gave up with trying to take the back of the bike apart and used a stud removal tool from Machine Mart to take out the sheared bolt.

Worked a treat - I decided to rethread it for an 8mm bolt at the same time.

Yeah, it's rear l/h stud for the grab handles (or rack in my case).
I figured they would stand being m8 better than the m6. Really not looking forward to trying to drill the stainless, do you have a link to the stud extractor that you used?
It wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't used stud lock

So no one knows how to disassemble thr rear plastics?!

Ok, got the rear plastics off.
All in all quite a complicated affair that requires the hidden catch to be not siezed - the thing that I thought was a helmet lock is infact the pull for the latch!

Now, to try & knacker things completely & drill the ss bolt........

When you've got the stud extractor in place, may I suggest a bit of very localised heat to release the loctite.

Your pain of getting the stud extractor in place will be nothing compared to dealing with a broken stud extractor.

Cheers for the info.

No headway yet.
I now have the stud extractors mentioned above, so far have tried heat & chiseling the stub anticlockwise (which didn't work.....)
Next is either weld a steel bar & use that to unscrew or drill & try the extractors.

Cheers, Phil

I also tried chiseling to make the broken stud turn but without success as you have found.

I would try the extractor next and if that doesn't work - then the welding!
