Just bought a second-hand set of engine protection bars made buy H and B, for my 1150.
They came with 2 long bolts and 2 spacers...the chap who sold them didn't know what they were for as he was selling for a mate etc....:blast. Anybody got any ideas.
Also fitting the bars, is there anything I should be aware of.
A couple of pictures showing the mounting positions would be nice.
I read on another thread that the rear mount goes between the rear peg hanger and the sub frame, is that correct?
Any help would be appreciated :beerjug:

Do a search on Hepco and Becker someone did a great set of instructions a while back.

The two long bolts and spacers are for the mounting point at the top of the rear footpeg hangers. This is the most difficult one as you have to align the engine bars, footpeg hanger and subframe perfectly to get the bolt inserted and to pick up the threads. What often happens is the bolt starts to screw in on the subframe bracket and it fools you into thinking you have caught the true tapped thread and you end up buggering up the threads on the bolt. The reason for this is when you take the footpeg hanger bolt out the subframe drops.

So, first of all insert the forward and middle mounting bolts and also the connecting bolt at the front of the engine that joins the engine bars together but leave it all loose. The rear mounting does go inbetween the footpeg hanger and the subframe. The spacers are "sided" one for the left and one for the right because there is a slight difference, trial and error will soon sort that out.

Remove the footpeg mounting bolt on one side only and place the bar mount inbetween the footpeg and subframe. I found that the best way to align the subframe again is to put a jack under the footpeg mounting bracket and raise/lower the jack by small amounts until the bolt goes in freely and picks up the thread. There are other ways of doing this and there is a document in the Wisdom section that describes another method. When you have succeeded in getting one side in, leave it loose and go do the other side, repeat, and then tighten everything up. The bars are a tight fit up front underneath the fuel tank and you may find that the bars are actually touching the seam of the tank and will obviously rub away as the bike is ridden. I squeezed small pieces of rubber between the bars and the tank to prevent this. The pressure of the bars pushing against the tank is enough to keep them in place.

Best of luck:thumb

Hepco and becker bars

Having severly bent my adventure bars which caused the bike to flip (as predicted by Mr Steptoe) now hjas any one put these to the test i.e. having a serious off and what happend to the bars? did they work or just fold up?.
Any advice welcome.
Dave (1150 gs.).

They get in the way, when servicing the bike, the left hand side cover comes off, but to remove the right hand one, you have to loosen the bolts that bolt the footrest hanger, and the one under the side panel cover that covers the tank bolt, and remove the bolt that connects the two sides together, then the cam cover can come off :thumb

Thanks Everybody

Got enough info. to give it a go now :)

I will be back if I come across anything I am unsure about :augie
