Here ya go... away an'pish yoursels

A HPN “Retail” Bike
This is no more than a collection of overpriced parts trading on the HPN name and marketing image. To add to this cache they say that Bikes are built on Basic, G/S or ST frames. There is no reason why they could not use other Airhead frames, (but see my PS below as i should not have mentioned this)
To built a Bike similar to what HPN offer would cost about £7,000 in parts and modification work, plus the cost of the Bike. There are guys in the UK, (maybe not in S Ireland), who can do similar work.

The sensible Alternative
The BMW GSPD is the best GS that BMW produced and is 85% of what HPN "turn out" for 95% of GS riders at a quarter of the price. (see PPS below). This is now the only strong section of the GS/G/S market as GS1200 owners, which have kept BMW Bikes in business for the last few years, are still "wealthy" enough to be tempted into buying Airheads. Once they loose this disillusionment the genuine Airhead market will settle and pre 1980 Bikes will once again become the topic of Airhead conversation.

VALUATION
Secondhand HPN Bikes have a limited following and £10k should get you a very good Bike.
The market for these Bikes is limited

Come on Bill..you are selling items so pleeeeeeaaase put them in the For Sale section:thumb2

Oh, I couldn't dissagree more about a lot of what you say but that's what makes this forum ace :)

:thumb2

Kenny - I am not - they were put in my answer to add interest, (sarcasm?), to the thread

I have never sold anything of much value to anyone on here
NOBODY is going to pay me £350 for a frame or "sealed bids over £6,000" for a GSPD - come on, you must know that

I wil, (have)l, or you can, take the section out of the thread if you want - but this is part of the "current spirit" airhead banter

Fair enough:)..we don't overmod in here:thumb2

i have now deleted the most interesting part of my posting, if your opinion is shared, i.e. the rest is crap

Buying used ones can be hard as according to Klaus from HPN only about 10% of the almost 700 bikes they have built since 1987 have been sold by the original owners.:augie Bill i would disagree with you , the market is small and demand for these machines is quite high..:thumb2

You are correct and I agree with you, but because of the (high), price that HPN charge the market is small and if you want one look to the secondhand market as most buyers get "sucked in" and want there own spec (new), Bike.

For a good many buyers, maybe not the majority, they are more about the HPN image that anything else

I just cannot see how they get away with it as the same Bikes can be produced for much less money. What they do is not "rocket science" and can easily be replicated in the UK.

But my point is really, why would anyone want one, when the PD, (even modified), is a far better Bike for most riders for the money

HPN Bikes – valuations and availability

I agree that HPN built Bikes are few and far between on the secondhand market and the figure of 70 is interesting, BUT my point is a more general one and maybe could be illustrated by asking the question and considering “how many HPN tanks have been sold”.

BMW had great success in the Paris Dakar Rally in the 80s and obviously entered for a commercial reason. Following this success they produced the 1985 R80G/S Paris Dakar mono and in 1989 the R100GS PD para, initially with Paris Dakar on the Tank, but after the “first Bikes – the 1989 model”, it had to be removed by BMW for copyright reasons, (not sure who owns the Paris Dakar name?), and was replaced by R100GS PD

My point is that there have been thousands of HPN “types” Bikes build, following in part the HPN or Paris Dakar concept. The build spec is easy to see as it has always been available from HPN, initially for the “big tank” Bikes and then for smaller tank ones built of the ST and G/S frames

The situation is that the HPN “style” can range from

to

OK the first is a little extreme

Many come up for sale each year.

If you want a full spec HPN Bike built by HPN it will cost you dearly but there are many variations in between and for guys who wanted a Paris Dakar image BMW produced the R100GSPD.

One of the marvels of the Airhead boxer engine initially developed so many years ago is that “an enthusiast in his shed” can build, (assemble), a PD ish Bike using readily available parts, either new from HPN and other suppliers or secondhand from a number of sources. Many such Bikes are worth very little and even at the top end good ones can be found quite often for well under £10k.

It doesn't matter how much you spend on them they don't go much faster (in the real world) than stock, use less gas or make the tappets any quieter. 10K for an airhead? Madness.
As an interesting project purely for self therapy, sure, but I can't justify the big bucks even for the objects of beauty we see on these pages!!!!! The huge tanks look nice, but how often would you need them? Super tall seat hight? Unless you really are a Paris Dakar super ace, for me the bike just becomes more impractical in most cases. But hey, each to his own and if I really did know what I was talking about I certainly wouldn't be sat at this desk in Cologne while the sun is shining and my trusty steed is parked outside!!:blagblah

You're probably right on the madness bit, but it's not about whether it's an airhead or what type of suspension it has etc......it's about a whole lot more than that....it's about soul :nenau

Madness or not, As I said on the other thread about that airhead in the German dealership.......given the choice of two sets of keys, one for the HPN airhead and the other for a brand new spankin 1200GSA, I would, quite genuinely, have ridden away on the big red bike :blast

I couldn't rationalise it for you, but some bikes just grab you and stir you :nenau
