my gs is idling at about 1500 revs is this too high ?

1500 sounds a wee bit high, 11-1200 would be better.

Yes, you may find the fast idle lever (choke to some) is stuck in the middle position. I had to fix someones last week which had done this.
A matter of dismantling the switch, which requires removing a confusing amount of screws and spraying with some lube etc.

Or maybe you've not pushed the lever all the way down as there are 3 positions.
