Hi-vis jacket

Hi does anyone know of a gortex hi-vis jacket (not Rukka ). There seems to be a few non breathable ones but I like the Gortex Shell and I havent seen any in high-vis except for Rukka which I cannot afford. I know about the Aerostich Roadcrafter but getting seems to involve the payment of shipping and duty. JJH

Thanks, I've just had a look Gortex at 269 and Sheltex at 179. I was looking for the newer type of Gortex that is bonded to the outer layer of clothing. I have it in 2 jackets BMW and H-G both dark colours. I would not like to go back to the old system. JJH

Think Halvarrsons do a hi-viz jacket.

Beware, hi viz jackets don't stay clean and shiny for long especially if riding in winter; the dirt tend to stick in the weave of the cordura. Personally I prefer a hi-viz light weight non-waterproof over-jacket (roadworker or police style) worn on top of my normal bike jacket. Cheaper to buy and easier to wash / replace when it becomes too grimy. Also has the added advantage of keeping your main bike jacket clean from road muck.

You can get goretex hi viz ex police jackets on ebay for about £35, I got one for the winter, good quality and very cheap. Search for one stop cop shop on ebay.

Its an excellent quality jacket, breathable and waterproof. Front chest pockets are handy and easy to get to and in my experience they too are waterproof. They wash up fine in non bio at 30º. Not too bulky either. High spec reflective striping, best I have seen on any jacket, you certainly shouldn't have any bother with folk seeing you. I have used it for cycling as well on dark winter mornings.

I know it may not be quite what you want, but some years ago I worked for a ferry company and we had company issue hi-viz padded long jackets for wearing down the docks.

During winter I used that jacket everyday on the bike, worn over my leathers, for several seasons and it never leaked, was warm and I used to throw it in the back of the car for emergency use too.

Great piece of kit - in fact I've still got it!

I have one of the Scott Hi-Viz jckets sitting in my wardrobe. Whilst a good armoured jacket it has a coiuple of problems:
1) The cordura weave holds the dirt. Jacket now a grimy grey / yellow despite washing.
2) The jacket cuffs were too elasticated / fitted to easily get your gloves inside the jacket cuffs. Cuffs somewhat bulky to comfortably wear the gloves over the jacket.
3) Also a very warm jacket; too hot for summer.

Been wearing a BMW Streetguard jacket for 50k plus with a hi-viz over-jacket when required. A far better designed jacket suitable for all UK riding conditions and, if you get one on sale, can be about / less than the price of the Scott jacket.

Mine never looked as if it had been worn either. Fantastic value for such a quality item of kit. I just wear a BMW Boulder jacket underneath it for CE Protection. Have used it with a Knox Undersuit protector jacket and that was good for warmer weather. I believe they are X North Yorkshire Police jackets, see them used a lot in TV series on both BBC and ITV.

Buy an ex police one, wear it over a decent textile bike jacket or leathers and then chuck it after 12 months because it will be filthy and once you wash it the jacket will fade and the 3M reflective tape will start to delaminate and lose its reflectivity
Remember that the sizes will be larger than normal as they are designed to be worn over full body armour.
As for them being new they probably are, some force will have no doubt paid £80 each for them new and they will never have been issued, they will have sat in stores at a HQ somewhere until someone else decided that they would change the style /design etc of the issue jackets and then the old unissued ones in stock will have been sold off in bulk for £10 or £15 a pop !!!!!
Very much doubt this kind of waste will happen again with the budget cuts.
