Marks adventure asked me to upload some pics when i got around to fitting the hid kit to the dakar, so here they are
The patient, already stripped
Tried the ballast up near the headlight, No room up there once everything is fitted and it's to close to the forks for comfort, if the ballast was to move whilst riding
Seeing as I've got the touratech headlight i tried fitting it above the headlight unit, it's a very tight fit, I didn't fit it there because i'd loose the ability to adjust the headlight easily.
I remembered seeing a pic of mickys bike a while ago, he'd mounted one of his ballasts near the oil tank, had a quick test fit, it works
Put some foam between the oil tank mount and the ballast to prevent it rubbing, put the cable ties around the front oil tank mount and strapped it up, put an extra cable tie around the rear oil tank mount and the horizontal ties to hold it in place. It is very secure, there's no movement of the ballast at all, Tho more cable ties wouldn't hurt. A couple of large jubilee clips might hold it better if you don't trust the cable ties.
I was going to get some neoprene and coat the sides and rear of the ballsat to prevent any damage to the bike, but i can't seeing as the unit doesn't work and has to go back
Finished fitting it anyway, makes it easier once the replacement arrives. I took the cables along the air duct that goes to the oil tank, i drilled a couple of holes in the black vent to tie down the cables out of the way of the forks. A couple of cable tie bases might work better but i din't have any available at the time
That's as far as i got, running the cables up to the light is easy from there, just make sure everything clears the forks ok and the forks still move freely and you should be good to go.
I spent a good couple of hours trying to squeeze the ballast on the bike, i tried putting it under the beak (would fit but too much stress on the plastics and routing cables would be a pita) looked at mounting it on the side fairings (no good for obvious reasons) The best i could come up with was where micky put his
However there is room for a ballast over the relay box infront of the battery, it's where touratech puts there unit for the headlight setup. You'd need to fab up a ballast mount to replace the plastic cover but it will fit, you'd also need to re mount the starter solenoid as well.
