HID bulb, won't fit

Bought the HID H1 5000K kit from last year but haven't had time to install it. Tried tonight but seems that the bulb doesn't fit in the holes. Also the instructions talk about plastic tabs where the springs hooks in. Mine is metal. It is teh H1 kit on a X reg R1150GS. Anyone had this before? And I am sure it will not fit into those holes.

You do need to drill out the bulb holders to make the HID bulbs fit - ?22mm wood bit from memory and take care not to cut through wires attached to the holder.

I fitted BOTH lamps to my 2003 R1150GS - no problems at all.

It took me about 40 minutes to fit BOTH high and low beams - it took about 3 days to decide where to fit the ballasts - under the beak - but once decided, the actual fitting was a sinch!

If you mean the lamps (bulbs) won't go through the hole in the reflector this is quite common. Don't try and force it at all as you don't want to mark the glass of the lamp.

I used a diamond swiss file and gently opened out the reflector always drawing it out so that any swarf would not fall inside the lamp and to eliminate the risk of lifting the reflective coating. Takes a few minutes that's all

Thanks, guys/girls. Yes it is the hole in the reflector that I was having issues with. I thought to use the file on it but wasn't sure. I try and not be like a bull in a china shop anymore. Getting to expensive... I'll try tonight.

It is against the law here to fit HID bulbs into fittings that are not designed for them. If I could buy an approved HID 1150GS headlight then it would be ok but bunging a bulb into a standard headlight is a no no.
I was thinking of fitting them to a vintage car I am working on as they draw low current for high output but obviously I cannot do this.

It is against con' & use regs here to but HIDs into light assemblies not designed for them in anything other than motorcycles.

The only stipulation for motorcycle headlights is that they don't dazzle.

The projector beam dip on the 1150GS produces a fantastically precise cut-off and highly defined beam pattern. It looks made for HID. At least it does with the 35w HIDs4U unit that I have fitted to mine.

If I were you I would consider the likelihood of getting pulled over and the penalties if you're charged and found guilty. You could always use the safety of the superior light source in mitigation. If the risk is low and the potential penalty reasonable then I would go for it anyway.

Same in Hong Kong - HID is only legal if it is a standard fitment item (i.e. fitted in the factory and was fitted to the vehicle when it was approved). Anyway, this is not the type of thing that the police here will pull you for - it is another thing that they can do you for if you fail the 'attitude test', for example, you get pulled for speeding and then give them a mouth full, so they throw the book at you and tow your car / bike!!!!

Anyways, the benefits outweigh the chances of getting into trouble, I reckon.
