HiD converted Micro DE's

A couple of pictures of the Micro DE's after my HiD conversion is done, 35 watt HiD's fitted and both pictures taken at the same time of day, but the camera does not like the bright light



And yes I know it's a Honda but lights are lights

Your headlight is a bit dim now

Looks like a clean install, I just did mine on the dakar last weeked, only got one working because one of the ballasts is Fubar'd

How did you fix the bulb into the housing? i used some washers to hold the bulb in using the existing three screws. Simple, low tech and just a little bodge it and leggit but it works.

That makes 4 hids on the dakar, that's got to be a record or something

I have had three S/S disks laser cut to size which hold the burner perfect, very high tec, looks the dogs

All done just sitting in the garage just got to find the time to fit them, just fitted Remus headers so will have to give them a go today

Yep, thats the most I could contemplate on a Dakar ... I have a mate with a Dakar wants to get a bunch of lights organised. So if I may mate, can you explain your set up?

You have the touratech replacement hi / low lights right? And what lights and mountings have you got for the fogs / or are they one fog + one spot?

More importantly, where have you hidden all the ballasts? I've only got one on mine at the moment and I couldn't hide that away nicely.

Yep sure can(i'll do the posistions as well), i do have the tt hi low setup, the kit comes with a hid for the high beam, that ballast goes in front of the battery, the existing relay box cover is removed and some bracketry supplied by tt replaces it and fixes the ballast in posistion. You can just see a red semi circle with a black cable coming out of it in the pic below, thats the high beam ballast.

the low beam ballast is fitted just under the oil tank on the l/h side of the bike

Micky thought of that one first, we have both done a fair number of miles with them in that posistion and mines survied a off with no damage or movement. The cables for that one are routed along the air ducting with a cable tie to keep them out of the way of the forks

Both of those ballasts are of the type with the built in starter.

For the aux lights (both touratech fog lights) i had to use the seperate ballast / starter type kits, mainly because the ballasts are all they way at the back of the bike, where the autocom is in the pic, haven't got a pic of my setup but the ballast sit in there nicely.

The cables are routed down each side of the frame to the tool holder space then they run down the l/h side of the frame upto the front (along with the low beam cables) where the starters are secured to the frame rail that supports the screen mounts, keeps the distance between the starter and the bulbs to a minium

All i've had to do extra is extend the wires between the ballasts and the starters by about 150mm for the l/h light and 300mm for the r/h light. The cable betweent the two is only carrying 90 odd volts so its possible to extend the cables without causing problems (tested by crimping a 1 metre extension into each on off the bike, just enough power got through to get the bulb going)

That's very interesting (I've a Vara myself). Could you tell me how you mounted the DEs and the ballasts? Did you fabricate your own mounting brackets?

A little while ago Les Wassel fitted 2 50w Hids
1 main 1 dipped to my 1200GSA
awsome lights
but yesterday he took it to the next stage
2 x 35w HID's in my spots
the old ones then looked yellow
but after he fitted the new ones this is what happened
i left Les at about 19:00
went down th M6 towards heathrow
takes about 3.5 hours to get home
so it was dark and i mean very dark along some stretches of the motorway around Oxford
the effect of all of them on was :
fogs
create a beam of light that lit up the floor like a police helicopter
dipped
this mixed in with the fogs made the floor even whiter
with these 2 on it lit up every sign on the motorway for a long way ahead
all three lanes were lit up
all three lanes on the other side were lit up
if there were any trees on both sides
these also lit up and bounced light off em
then i put on the main beam
it was like a torpedo
jumping across the other three beams way out into the distance
i at that point didnt realise how little light cars and lorries have
even an artic lorry with all the spots on was dingy compared to my spread of light
from a safty point of view
no one and i mean no one could ever say sorry i didnt see you
they make me feel very very safe at night
look great
and dont cost much to fit (put a price on your life)
best mod you will ever have on a GS
