Anyone "this side of the water" know anyone who is an expert at supplying and fitting HID kits to GS12's?

After riding in heavy rain and darkness for a couple of hours on Friday night i have come to the conclusion my lights are complete and utter s***e!!

An urgent upgrade required as well as fitting BMW fog lights..
Are bulb upgrades worth it?

Any help greatly appreciated......
Happy to travel..

I had planned to buy a set of these for my bike in Germany (from Les W), until I spoke to the local TÜV (MOT) station here and was told they were completely illegal in Germany, unless they carry a European E mark. (In my case, that would be a new BMW HID headlight fitting and such an animal does not exist).

I don't think the UK is yet so hot on enforcement of non E Marked additions to your bike, but there is talk that they will be failed at MOT test time in the near future. From what I read on this forum, the UK police don't go out of their way to stop uncertified HID fittings, but they certainly do in Germany.

Loads of people seem to fit them in the UK, however.

Item 1. Headlight. As others have said: contact les Wassel of this parish.
Buy his HID conversion. Do not waste your money on upgraded lamps..
No problem with MOT if lined using a beamsetter. I have passed 3 years running without comment.

Rest. Your lights may be utter shite, but fitting foglights won't help.
In addition to their use being illegal except in fog or falling snow, their focal point is so close to the bike you will not get any benefit at speeds above 5 mph.
If you really wish to see where you are going, buy as set of Hella DE HID driving lights. Megamoney, but superb. Wire them to come on with main beam & they are legal.

Thanks..

Thanks for all the replies..

Was wondering about the legal side come mot time.
Not sure about the DIY aspect as knowing me when it comes to electrics i will end up with charred remains

Will investigate the Hella DE option..

Myke: Do you know any good autoelectrics people in this locality?

These people in the link below seem very clued in as well to all things HID.

Look at the price of the driving lights I was telling you work properly!

http://www.ebay.de/itm/HELLA-DE-MIC...609868394?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item27b923fe6a
That's correct: 398 Euro for a pair.

This is on Ebay Germany. If you do not read German, Nebel is fog, so if you see nebel in a description you will know.
Most of the Hella DE listed on sale there are foglights:I.E. Nebel in the name.
Your search string is: "hella de"
I will pm you wiring diagrams etc if you wish.
I am too busy to fit anything for you , but you are welcome to come to Newry on a dark night & take my bike for a run to see just how good lights can be on a motorcycle.
There is no night when on main beam.
Myke

Pricey!

Just seen the price myself on Ebay:eek:

Dont do enough night time riding to justify that!!

Will investigate the HID dip/main beam option and thanks for the offer Myke:thumb2

That Hella price is very cheap considering it is for a right AND a left Xenon lamp. As said, they are legal, because they have an E Certification. However, only one lamp can be fitted to a bike in Germany, so they offer a left or a right lamp, depending on what side of the road you are driving.

Last time I checked with TÜV, they showed me the rules and these specify up to 4 lights can be fitted, excluding the little parking light and low powered Day Light Running Lamps. i.e. one main beam, one dip beam 2 fogs OR two spots OR one fog+one spot. In fact you could have two dip and two hi beams if no fogs or spots are fitted, if I understand the TÜV rules correctly.

The rules are pretty strict here and Touratech have being trying to get an (CREE?) LED parking light replacement approved, but so far have been refused!

Generally the stuff by Wunderlich, Touratech and of course BMW, will all be TÜV approved and you will see if you look in their on line catalogues that they specify only one xenon spot lamp and that costs a staggering €350 each lamp, not a pair. For me, that is the only legal option.

I think if you watch one of the LWR or LWD films, you will see the bikes with only one fog light on. I assumed that that was because the bikes were prepared in Germany by Touratech and they swapped one fog light for a single Xenon spot (per TÜV standards).

When I have assessed how good or bad my lights are, I may fit a Xenon spot, if I can justify the cost.

The E Certification applies throughout the EU, so these rules in theory apply similarly to all areas. But it seems enforcement is not applied equally.

I got the kit from Les, simple to fit, no technical expertise needed whatsoever, virtually plug and play!

Just make sure to specify the kit for the 1200GS which comes with all the cables and wires already made up, replacement screw caps for where the bulb goes in included.

The biggest piece of work is tidying up the wires nice and neatly. Get those velcro ties, much easier than fiddly cable ties!

...and you have some light

2 x Ring BRL048 wired thru a fused relay to the sidelamp circuit Flat bit of bar across below beak and all of a sudden you have 3 x 55W on low beam and a helluva spread of light!

AND the beauty of BRL 048 is that they have a flat beam and will not dazzle oncoming traffic provided you have the lens the right way up and set half decent

Cheaper and a Helluva lot more environmentally friendly as you'll NOT be burning the retina outta the car drivers

AND other bikers......

Agreed Brother Monk Apologies but usually car drivers get hit hard due to the height difference

I found Bikes to not be so serious a problem but I am in the Tarka's Ban HID lights but not his "Ban Hi Vis Group" :D

The sooner that Law about retrofitting without self levelling comes in the better

Although there are Really no plods to enforce it just like the mobile and driving law!

Anyway those wee lights will give a BIG pool of light without annoying people

Apologies for possibly hi-jacking this thread, but it's the same topic(ish). I posted on the 'GS Mods' section on 'HID Colour' to see what Kelvin rating most folk run with.
I'm going to order the full kit from Les as I met Rosahane last Friday and was impressed by the kit and the 'plug-and-play' nature of what is provided.
I realise as I go up around 6000K the light gets whiter and then takes on a purple/ blue tinge heading up to 8000K, etc.
So, is it to be 4300K (like OEM HID lights), 5000K or 6000K ?
Any advice/ comments appreciated.
Cheers

I've just had a look around the hid50 site and can't find any references to 1100's. Does anyone know if they supply kits for 11's?

Also sorry to the op'er for going slightly off topic.

HID Expert

If you look at the site under ABOUT and WHAT BULB TYPES ARE SUITABLE FOR CONVERSION. Scroll to the Bottom, you will see reference to new Single H4 Kits. I was onto LES yesterday inquiring about lights for my R1100RT, These single H4 kits are for the 1100's. Come in 35 and 50 watt package.....Plug and Play......Les is away for next 8 days, No Shipping until he returns.....

Hope this helps. I'll be getting one.....raid the piggybank.....

Hi Kevin, I actually don't know what colour Les gave me, just that they are very bright and very white:cool:

Dunno did i say it, but get a few of those small black velcro cable ties to tidy up the wiring, the only fiddly bit is getting in to cable tie. The velcro ties are much easier to use.

Regards, Tom
