I wired up a hid bulb today.

From the instractions it looks like main/dip is facilitiated by the bulb moving.

It does move - it rocks backwards about 2mm. Is that right? It doesn't seam to make much difference - but then i haven't got it out on the road.

Pete, It's not the actual bulb that moves in the H4 light. It is a sleeve over the bulb that moves back and forth, changing the angle of light on the headlight reflector.

If you have mounted the buld in the headlight in the same way as you would a conventional H4 bulb, there should be nothing outside the headlight that moves. If there is, then something is not right and you need to check the bulb is located correctly.

Looks like you have the same buld I fitted to Jills 100. Saved me a load of trouble fitting extra spot lamps. :thumb2

PS: Make sure that conectors pushed fully home too.

.

I'll check again - but watching it trying to figure out what was happening nearly burnt out my retinas!! I was seeing spots in front of my eyes for hours afterwards!

Val: how far does the sleeve move, If mine is moving its a millimetre or so ? Is the movement that small?

You have it near enough correct.

There is a solenoid at the rear of the burner whcih moves it back and forward between dip & main beam.
The ones sold by Les Wassel of this parish are superb.
I bought a couple previously, apparently identical, from another supplier, and one could not see where one was going, either on dip or main beam, because there was a "hole" in the centre of the beam.

Thanks for checking - that means there is something wrong with mine - it barely moves - only a mm or so

Yep, sounds like it's not right. Jills moves about 5mm or there abouts.

you can remove the bulb from the solernoid by twisting it a few degrees. It seperates at the green ring. You might be able to get it to move propperly then.
