can you help i have just swapped bikes from the 07 gs adventure to the 08 model . i took the hids from my old bike and started to fit them to my new bike and i have hit a problem . they for some reason will not work in the dip beam but the main beam works ok i thought there must be a fault with the hids so i swapped the hids round and still no joy.. when i turn the engine on the bulb ignites for about a second then thats it can any one shed any light on the problem for me thanks

try...

you suggest that you are turning on the engine, but are you just turning on the ignition?

Try starting the engine up, see if that works.

Patrick.

hi pat yes i start the engine the main beam works ok but not the main beam

Working (very slowly, due to my lack of time) through a very similar problem myself with the assistance of the supplier of the units.

With my kit the dip beam sometimes ignites properly but more often than not doesn't. I usually but not always get the brief 'flash' when I turn on the ignition then the bulb illuminates for probably half a second or so before going out and LAMPF appearing. I need to turn off the ignition to get another go.

I have to say I've not swapped the HIDS round yet but in the next few days I will swap HIDs and ballasts around to try to eliminate the problem.

I fully admit to not being an expert on analogue electronics or the canbus system but I did do some digital datalogger circuit design as part of a previous job a few years ago so (unusually) I'm not talking completely out an orifice not usually used for speech.

My pet theory (feel free to shoot it down:hide) is that a component somewhere is only just on the edge of being in its correct tolerances and given the inherent drift in voltage levels and current draw the HID is sometimes (in my case) fooling the bike into thinking that it's not working. As I understand it the canbus monitors the power drawn by the lights and if it thinks something is wrong then it shuts down the circuit, hence the problem.

There are some similar threads on ADVRider and it seems that inserting an resistor/capacitor somewhere in between the ballast/igniter and bulb resolves the issue.

I can't help the OP but I'll be interested to know the outcome.

thanks for that andy i am going to try and contact the supplier in the morn hopefully i can get some info off them .. the puzzling thing is they worked ok on my 07 adventure

Might be the bike rather than the units, perhaps the 08 thinks a bulb is out at a slightly different threshold than an 07? Might even be down to the software version the bike is running as I've no doubt it's not a problem on all 08's.

I had exactly the same problem when I fitted the HID kit. The dim would come on for a second or two and then shut down. I had the right hand ballast on the bracket to the dip and the left hand ballast to the full. I swapped around the ballasts to the main and dip and everything was fine, swapped back and no go! So, one ballast had a problem on the dip only.

I just left them swapped over and haven't had a problem:D

HID not working on dip

You are up aginst BMW's load monitoring system. The main beam is capable of passing circa 85w without the system tripping, but the dip beam trips if load exceeds 55w. Your HID lights probably draw 33w when warm, but over 100w for the first 1.5 secs. This is enough to trip the monitoring system. Unless someone knows otherwise, it is not possible to recalibrate.
The only way round is to get the dip beam circuit to operate a relay, & switch the HID light direct off the battery via a relay & fuse.
Unfortunately, when you do this, the system then sees insufficent load, & the faulty lamp sensor comes on.
So you have to fit a fault cancelling capacator as well.
Because of the way things are wired, you cannot now fit the fault cancelling capacitor into the plug & socket of the HID light, you have to wire it partly via the dip supply to the relay and partly through the 0v to the HID unit.
Sounds Horrible. doesn't it. It is. However, If you contact me at [email protected] I will email you a PDF drawing & all details of how to do it. See my other posts re Len Wassel Autoswitch fitment to get a flavour of what is needed & how to get round problems you are encountering.
Let me know how you get on.
Regards Michael

i think rubins bought some shite gear again!! i bought mine from a chinese sweatshop off ebay, 20quid a set, it did the hi-lo beam and the spots on my 08 adventure for 40quid with no probs, take it from me guys rubin aint got a clue!!

rubin needs help!!

i just want to give you an update on rubins quest to fit the hid's..when i left him last night he was in tears! he said if he doesn't get them working this morning he was goin to wire his knackers up to the ballasts and end it all!! if any of you lot know what you're doin give him a ring or send him a txt on 07961-318203 before it's too late!!....................his mum!
