HID Lamp for 800GSA

May I ask why. Surely if its malfunctioning it's still under warranty. Or am I getting mixed up with LEDs. If it's after market it must be the same as a 800gs ? JJH
Yeah it's an after market light conversion that was installed by the previous owner who then PX-ed (I assume) for their next bike. I bought the bike with HID installation already in place from BMW and their response has been "We don't do those lights, try ebay".

There's a guy on here does them can't think ok his name Les? Someone will see this and point u in the right direction. HOLD on a minute. The dealer can't do this. YOU HAVE RIGHTS. They just can't do this. Get back on to them and don't talk no for an answer. Bloody cheek. Let us know how you get on. JJH

Erm.......of course they can.
It's a bulb, and a bulb is a consumable.
If they don't keep them, what are they supposed to do ?
Emma......any garage should have a standard 55w H7 bulb......if you look at the HID kit you have there and disconnect the bulb, you can almost certainly bypass the HID ballast and stick in a standard H7 halogen one as a temporary measure using tghe original wiring (HID kits ADD to the wiring rather than replacing it, IYSWIM) , then you can replace the HID lamp at your leisure and keep the H7 bulb as a spare

Another thought.....the 800gs runs two bulbs, one for high and one for low beam.
They're the same though....both are H7 bulbs and it's the reflectors that differ in the way they spread and direct the light.
So you could swap your high beam bulb across to the low beam side and run with that on as a temporary measure.....obviously you wouldn't have high beam until you get another, but running with a low beam without HB is better than having to run on High beam

I actually found someone who sells HID kits just up the road from me (HID City, if you are interested). He suggested it was more likely to be the ballast than the bulb, but gave me a kit to try and said we can sort out payment when I have figured it out. It was indeed the ballast, which I have now replaced (I am so proud of myself) and I now have a working light again.

File the little bit of info about the standard H7 bulb being able to use as an emergency spare in the back of your head though.....pretty much any garage or jazzed up petrol station stocks them and if your out touring somewhere it and have a problem, it might get you out of schtuck

No, but when you fit an HID kit, you take the wires from the original bulb to the ballast (or to it through the kit's loom) , so nothing is actually cut off.
So in effect, you can reverse the process immediately by unplugging the wires that go to the ballast and re-connecting them to a standard bulb using the original connectors.
It's a good idea to carry a bit of insulating tape or some small cable ties so you can tie up any dangly bits (that's a technical term), but it does mean that you can get out of trouble, or swap things about if you go to Austria for example, where you are likely to get fined for having non standard lighting.

I bought a toolkit with the tools that fit the GS fixings. It came in very handy today, and it has ties and insultating tape and stuff in, so that will stay with the bike.

Yeah, as Fanum has said, the bulb itself isnt covered in the warranty, although it wasnt the bulb in the end. I didnt expect them to fix it, but they knew I am new to bikes (at least proper bikes) and I would have liked something along the lines of "Well, we can't help directly, but let me have a ring around (or google) to see where you can get help from" rather than "Maybe try ebay".
As it was, when I got home I managed to find someone to help in my home town. The BMW dealership knew where I live, they could have done a bit more to help out than they did and that would have made all the difference.

I'd be taking it straight back and telling them to put it right.
I can't understand how anyone can stand over a dealer who leaves someone in the above predicament. They just washed their hands of the problem. I'm not familiar with the various consumer laws in the UK but here in Irl they would have to put it right. They seem to think that because it wasn't standard it wasn't their problem. But they sold it like that so it's even more so. JJH
