hi, got a mate who fitted HID on 1200GS. while on M.way, transformer caught fire. If you fit one, make sure transformer is in direct airflow to keep it cool. I bought a kit, but decided not to risk it. Worth thinking about .....

Fitted good quality HID's to my 1150GS and buried the transformers either side of the headstock under the front of the fuel tank. 60,000 miles later not a whiff of smoke let alone a transformer fire. I think that the relevant term is "good quality".

My current Super Ten has 35 watt HID's from Les W and again the transformers aren't in a position to benefit from the airflow. No issues despite doing a good few miles at low speed on dirt tracks. I've never been flashed for dazzling oncoming drivers either.

As for the Auto Express article it reads like a marketing campaign for Auto Express. There is nothing more dangerous than inadequate headlights on a motorcycle, typically BMW's idiotic adherence to a single lamp for each of the dip and head, when a car fitted with at least twice as many lights runs up behind you on an unlit road on a wet dark night. When that happens you may as well shut your eyes as it will make bugger all difference to what you can actually see.

Les is the way to go,

I bought a kit for my 2009 about 4 years ago, I did have a few problems with the ballast causing canbus errors, Les' customer service was top notch, with sound advice and his knowledge of the subject he found a solution, you won't get that from eBay I'd bet !

I have these powered from one of the OEM spotlamp fuses, with a relay to work only with main beam. The other fuse drives an LED halo ring fitted around the spot's lenses.

They were so low cost I took the risk and they really are great. The square shape spot is a really long range searchlight. Great for main beam. The one downside is the three mode action so they cant be dimmed for use as daylights.

These have the halo built in

You may also find them (like mine) with no halo ring.

Just bought the lights as above! would the halo run off the 501(canbus led in at mo) bulb without throwing an error up? then I can have the main lights on a switch, best of both worlds then!

I do know of officers now who will when checking vehicles at the roadside through MID ask if it has any modifications listed (especially boy racers with lowered suspension etc and those who fail the attitude test). If the answer comes back no mods notified and as such the company concerned considers the vehicle uninsured as a result of failure to disclose the driver is prosecuted for driving without and the vehicle seized.

I have not heard of HID's in particular but other lighting issues yes. Maybe Euro marked auxiliary lighting may be a safer bet for some.

Well tell them to go and speak with a decent brief as the vehicle cannot be seized under those circumstances as the policy IS valid for third party purposes.
The only thing it would not be valid for would be no licence/banned. The mid only have details of the certificate, they do not have details of the policy cover and even so it would not automatically invalidate the insurance.
Your still covered if the MOT has run out as well.
May well be other offences but not ones that can get your car seized under section 165, however it may be that they are seized for "Vehicles used in manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance" which is something different.
