HIDs - How long do they last?

Just wondering like... as I fitted HIDs some 50ishK miles ago.

The dipped ballast is original, the bulb was replaced about 15K miles ago with a 7R (IIRC, the one with a small sheath to reduce the amount of light that's thrown skywards). I'll admit the working bulb I took out was looking black in places but still worked aok.

Having said that the ballast for the full beam didn't last long, but I prefer having a full beam that is instant on.

Mine lasted about 18mths :(

Went back to old style bulbs and all been fine since...
 
Mine were still going after nearly 5 years before I traded it in. Current Gsa have been nearly a year.

I think the lifetime is measured in quite a few 1000's hours use.
 
Has anyone else noticed the ammount of cars with one blown HID this year? Makes me think that they are a bit expensive to replace, so people don't bother.
