High beam bulb

Ello all

Currently got a HID50 conversion for my dipped beam and auxillary lights, but find at night my lights, whilst bright, do not light the road up any distance. Would want to convert my high beam to HID only that they take a while to warm up, by which time I've had to go back to dipped as a result of traffic.

What bulb would you recommend as a brighter replacement without melting the reflector?!?

You are right about a HID usually being too slow to warm up for main beam use.

I used to run a 100W bulb on main beam on my 1150 which was an improvement but in a 1200, the system will probably shut down the circuit as doubling the current draw would register as a fault. They are illegal anyway.

My solution was a couple of 55w spots which turned night into day. I don't know what your aux' lights are but I don't suppose they do much by way of lighting up the road?

There are many to choose from but I used a pair of cheapo ones from Halfords as they were quite small but effective

Very odd that your HID appears to be so bad. My HID lights up catseyes in daylight and is superb at night - you might want to check the alignment of your headlight as a first step.

Secondly, while the HID main beam will be slower than the dip - it is only the time it takes to power up which is less than a second, it shouldn't make it unuseable - plus, if there is oncoming traffic, you can see where the road goes anyway without recourse to main beam lights.

Have you got your dipped beam adjusted correctly?? I suppose the little lever on the back of the headlight (for when carrying a pillion) is in the UP/horizontal position???

What do you mean "What lever??"


How about having your aux lights come on with high beam???

I have a 55w 5000k HID dip beam and it's fantastic. I also have a 55w 6000k high beam

My aux lights are these >> CLICKY << and they are so bright it's unreal.

those aux lights will be great for getting seen but pretty ineffective over any distance. They probably have about a 5th of the lumens of a stock halogen. Eyeball hurting bright yes but reaching into the dark, no.

That's what I thought when I saw them (they were fitted by the previous owner). But they are very good and throw a good pattern out.
