I had noticed when I pressed the high beam switch on my R1200GS 04 it would not come on. Thinking the bulb was gone I changed it but it still did not come on. While pressing the switch on and off I noticed the high beam light indicator on the dash came on so I started to flick the switch back and forward, the light came on but would not stay on. I notice that with the high beam switch pressed forward the light would go off . I then applied a little pressure to the top of the switch while it was in the forward position and the light would come on.

I thought it must be something to do with the internals of the switch so I stripped it down had a look, went through the internals. I could not figure what the problem was, there was nothing obvious. I put the switch gear back together and on the handlebars but still the problem persisted.

I took the bike for a spin heading down the motorway and I though I would switch on the high beam see if it worked. What happened next puzzled me so hopefully someone can tell me what’s wrong. When I pressed the high beam switch the speedometer and the rev counter needles just drop also all multifunction display went blank for a second as if the bike was switch off. The bike didn’t loose any power and the speedo, rev counter and the multifunction came back on a second later.

Anyone able to help, maybe tell me what the problem might be as I don’t have any idea what to do.

Thanks Irishkev

I would replace the micro switches in the main/dip switch block. But also check the can bus wires for fraying and check the switch mechanics are properly moving the microswitch.
