Hi folks,

I am looking to buy a 2nd hand 1150GS, seems I can afford to spend about 6 grand. Looking at the various websites (autotrader, MCN and BMW) that this will result in a 2001 model with high mileage (40000-50000 mi). Any opinion on the mileage, any experience with oilheads and high mileage. :nenau

In the past I had a high mileage K75S, and things started to go wrong now and then. (brake cylinder, fuel injection). Any known problems with higher mileage GS1150's. I know they will run for a lot longer ;)

cheers
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

50k is not really high mileage. No major problems to be expected.
But nothing lasts forever, you can expect minor faults every now and then.

* you might have brake discs that are on the edge (min. = 4.5 mm / new = 5 mm)
fix: new discs (££)
* throttle bodies sometimes show play on the valve bearings
fix: new throttle bodies (££££)
* check the rear wheel for play
fix: adjust play (-)
* clutch can be worn, some do it in 20k, some in 100k
fix: new clutch (££)
* alternator belt is due for replacement at 40k, is it done?
fix: new belt (-)

Otherwise, if it is well maintained you should be good for another 50k.

I'm sure others wil extend the list :D

Cheers,
Michel

Reckon if you keep looking you`ll find ones with a lot lower milage for your 6K. But as above higher milage is not a problem. Try to find one with as many extras as poss cos you will want them :thumb

I bought my Blue/White, 11500 miles, 2002 1150 GS (excellent Condition) last October from a dealer for £5800 that included system panniers!!! :D

You can do much better if you look around!

Don't give up

I paid six and a half for a mint condition 2003 model GS with panniers from a BM dealers with 11,000 miles last autumn. Got 12months warranty, tax, 2 new tyres and a service with that

But it was yellow :dabone

Bought my 2003 1150GS (16k, fsh, abs  , panniers etc) privately last october for 6150.

is that $6000?

big difference. you could easy get a low miler in the UK for £6000.

Just sold my 2000 X reg 1150GS with 99760 miles on it - throttle body was noisy, and clutch lever a bit stiffer than normal. Apart from that it was all ok.

Most problems will have sorted themselves out,or at least shown themselves by 50k.You might buy a pup or a gem,you don't know until you start to use it a lot.You can have problems with a brand new bike as well.Just buy it and ride it.

mileage

hi
this is a bmw with high milage, they are tools made to be ridden ,not like some other bikes i could mention and have owned, go for it ,as long as it has history should,nt be a problem, seen a old gs month ago with 135000 on it ,did look like it done it as well.

I don't know what the US market is like pricewise, but I'd say check you dealerships (Approved Beemer search on the BMW website?) You may be pleasantly surprised, or as another member pointed out investigate the 1100s, you could get a minter with a ton of kit, too!
