what issues should I be looking for on a high mileage r850gs? 100k on it but good history apparently. Its on ebay at the moment - any advice gratefully received
 
I would ask if and when it had a clutch change as it's an expensive job unless you can do it yourself. Check gearbox operation/excessive noise, check the final drive for play.
Ideally it would be nice to whip the starter motor off and peek inside the housing looking for rear oil seal leaks and pulling the final drive to swing arm gaiter back to check for leaks (should be easy to do this one as it hopefully has metal gaiter clamps rather than zip ties).
And ask for some close up pictures maybe?
The engine should cope just fine with 106,000 miles, it's all the other bits that can and do wear.
 
Sounds expensive to me at £1600

But ,I wouldn't pay that much for a 100k bike
I've paid less than £1k for (admittedly scruffy ) bikes with a1/4 of the miles
A bike with that many miles could have all sorts of potential issues from silly things like worn out switchgear to major issues like gearbox bearings or clutch,etc etc
As said I havnt even looked at it but it would need to be cheaper before I would hand over hard earned:augie

mike you and steptoe seem to have a knack for picking up cheap bikes - us mere mortals have never seen a sub £1k GS in any flavour except 'fubar' - mine was £1100 and it was in need of let's say *some* TLC to put it kindly

At the end of the day a bike is worth the sum of its parts,a 100 k bike has no parts of any value if you try to sell honestly,
Would you buy a s/h engine with that mileage?
It's not a knack of picking bikes up,or ripping anyone off,we just come into a lot more contact with folk maybe wanting to offload something,and are realistic about it's real value if it has a major issue.
Plus if the vendor isn't happy they are more than welcome to walk away and offer the item for sale elsewhere if they can be arsed
eBay is not a place you will ever get a real bargain as you are bidding against a potentialy huge number of people that maybe only want 1 bike to mess with:comfort
 
all true Mikeyboy - didn't say I was going to buy it - was just interested in potential issues. Looking for a cheap 850/1100 to use off road. Therefor don't want to hack about a nice one

Patience is the name of the game,harder you try,the more you will pay,
Perfect example here;
Bloke wanted me to convert this back to a standard bike,1/2 hour looking and talking,
I suggested he was better off selling it and buying a stock bike as the work involved would be more than the cost of said advice.
He says,I can't sell it cos it's worth nothing
I says how much do you want for it?
He says £800 and a lift to the station.
At this point all of the risk is mine,I don't know the bloke,the bike any issues!!!!!
Firstly I didn't want it.
Secondly ,what does he know that I don't
As it turns out all was perfectly good with the bike,I sold it on here ,for £1500 ,so I made a bit.
The bloke that bought got a fair bit of ribbing cos he sold it ,prob a week later if memory serves it made £2400 on eBay
It was never ever worth that but ,heyho,that is eBay.
It was a £1500 bike,if the gearbox had been fucked I'd have been running at a loss
Propshaft pooped I'd have made a drink on the deal
Engine issues?. I might have we'll have stayed in bed for the week
This bloke came to my door not the other way round.

I've just turned down a very very rough high mileage 1200ADV I was offered for less than what people are paying for high mileage 1100/1150 models. Didn't want it as you can guarantee it'll cost double what you think to make it presentable, and as Mikey has said, feck all on it to break and sell as its all worn out.
